Am I right in thinking that a standard satellite (such as would be used for Freesat or Sky) wouldn't be able to pick up any of these channels?

A standard satellite dish used for Freesat or Sky can be used to pick up these services, BUT you'd have to realign it (point it in a different direction), and then obviously you wouldn't be able to pick up Freesat or Sky on it any more. If you want both at once, there are a couple of things you could do - you could get probably a new dish with two LNBs on the arm at different angles (that works if they are reasonably close satellites and the dish is reasonably big, for instance I get 19.2°E (mostly German channels) and 28.2°E fine on an 80cm dish in the South of the UK). Advantage of this is that you can record on both at once, disadvantage is that you only get those two positions. The other way is to motorise your dish so that it can actually be moved automatically. The advantage of this is that you can pick up anything not obstructed by buildings/trees and that your dish is big enough to get. The disadvantage is that it can't be in two places at once so if you're recording something on 19.2°E, you have to watch things at that position too.

What size dish have you got ?... there's loads of free movie channels all year - we've installed TD88's near you & further north & further west that get them - better margins with a 1m /1.1m though..

80CM Comag dish, what sats are they on?

I am afraid to erect a 1 meter dish due to windblow up here,
I planted the dish on an old footpath post,three feet deep in the garden in concrete , although the 80cm rarely moves.
Crap Maplin motor(usals packed up again) but excellent,but old Comag SL 35 reciever & dish mover.

Arabsat & Nilesat mostly (BADR4 & Atlantic Bird 7)

You do need a decent 80 for BADR4 & 90 min I think for AB7 & better a 1m/ 1.1... but North Wales is a good reception area if you are not looking over a town - you are a % better off for the weak sats because it is less built up & so is the view south than say Manchester/ Liverpool/ Midlands etc..

We've installed right on the banks of the Dee & as far west as Hollyhead so if it's decent gear & strong brackets it'll deal with it.

If the Comag 80 is like the Silvercrest 80s- they are smaller than 80 I think.. plus they are thin so bend easy - any distortion in the dish will rule out 26e/7w plus you do need a sensitive lnb & receiver - the comag sl35 are very solidly built & motor control in USALS is spot on or was..- sensitivity isn't the best but you can get some or all of them with a td88 there - I keep a list of receiver/ tuner sensitivity [or selectivity] performance - so I know where that one is ..

Might be doing one in Wrexham in the next week so I'll do measurements..

Many thanks Pedro, I am located as high as it gets near Bwlchgwyn (Wrexham) the highest village in Wales almost 1400 ft. The Triax td88 is I presume a better quality dish than my old 8 year old Comag 80cm with more gain

It is a lot better build & design & has genuine better gain but now you have said the HASL is 1400ft - we've installed satellite dishes near Flash- the highest village in England & they have recorded 120mph+ & has it's own micro climate (usually colder & foggy with low cloud). Triax like most dishes are rated up to 60mph good functionality & 100mph survival - only Channel Masters & Prodelin & other commercial stuff go higher - usually quoting 125mph survival & also there is the issue of funneling that amplifies wind speeds & long term wind issues.. so we'd still take extra precautions- we've added feed support arms & bracing on the back to the top & sides & bottom of the dishes to bring the dish face up to Channel Masters & used any sheltering techniques available.

That Comag dish is probably distorted with a lump over the AZ/EL bolts if you look at it & run your hand over it- you can with care & a keen eye put that right - you might just get BADR4 then & mbc2/max or Dubai One etc..

Out of interest, which TD88 model do you use, I note there are several. amusing on E Bay there are TD88s at £40 and also TD110s at almost the same price, are these best avoided,although they say unopened & not damaged.Where as trusted sites charge £80 for the TD 110

Actually buying dishes mail order is a problem - most I've seen when customers buy their own get bent in transit - we always get them direct through the trade & won't even let them deliver- we pick them up & check them first- but I've just done a customer & he bought a dish mail order & they had really packed it well - so I should find out who that was... if a dish is out more than about 2mm - it starts to matter on weak sats & it's better if it's below 0.5mm

otherwise try to make sure it's handled/ shipped OK- [not easy to bend a 1.1 btw... but HERE'S a TD88)

we use trade [no logo] or the logo ones - grey white or red - all the same otherwise..

btw... this is to help receive some of the best free to air Gems ..

Sorry to go off thread, but..

I would always recommend collecting dishes in person if you can. Sometimes some of the fixings go missing in transit due to poor packing by the dish manufacturer/wholsaler, let alone the retailer.

One of my 'local' favourite retailers does offer collection in person, just five minutes walk from Euston station.

I did get a strange look from the the 476 bus driver at Euston when I took my TD88 home by bus though
