Has anyone experienced the problem of mild electric shocks from satellite receiver cases? (or any other metal cased AV equipment for that matter). When conditions are good for conduction (eg bare foot) I always seem to get a small but noticeable shock when I touch the case. This surely cannot be good!?! I have tried eliminating various connections and it seems to be linked to the connection of the scart to the TV. It doesn’t really bother me too much, but as an installer of satellite dishes try explaining it to someone who has young kids. Help/advice is appreciated.

sounds like a short somewhere, i use to get from one of my boxes, took the box back and exchanged it and it was ok after that.

the only thing you can do , each test each piece of equipment.

But in saying that it could just be static from the carpet and you are earthing yourself. like when you go in hotels, and catch the metal door, or even like on a car door.

As mentioned above, it could be static build up on your body, like when getting a shock when touching a car door.

If it is a continuous tingle then it is due to interference suppression components in the TV or satellite box.
It normal and safe as it is a very low current, many people can not feel it, but if you have damp or sweaty hands (and bare feet) then it can be felt.

To prevent static build up and prevent interference the 0 volts line (which is connected to SCART and aerial socket screen) is connected to the mains via a capacitor and/or resistor.

You could connect the screen of the aerial cable (or metal body of aerial plug) to earth to prevent this, but it is not necessary as it is safe.
