Sadly, i have an iPod, and whats worse I use iTunes....but can anyone in the know suggest how i can have my iPod connected into my USB port, with all my files on the pod displayed on iTunes but NOT on charge? I feel it does the battery no good, and surely there must be an option to switch off the constant charging......any suggestions?

Assuming it's a LiOn/LiPolymer type battery - it doesn't do it any harm. They don't suffer from the "memory" effect of NiCads.

Any idea how good these batterys are good for? I've read some complaints that they tend to reduce in longevity after a year, and it costs a small fortune to replace.

Thanks for the info though. I reckon Apple sneakily pretend that constant charging doesn't do the battery any harm....and then clean up at replacement time!

I've got a 2 year-old big white (20GB) ipod. The battery is still OK AFAIK (I haven't run it all the way down for a while). I usually only charge it overnight (ie not 24X7).

I think there's a "luck of the draw" factor as well - your battery might peg out after a week or last a few years.

It's not constantly charging - once the battery's full, it will stop charging (you'll see the icon change), and the device will just be powered via USB.

I've had mine for nearly two years, and the battery is just fine. Also, I think it's like a mobile phone battery, it charges until fully charged and then goes on standby.

Maybe the OP doesn't like iPods and/or iTunes. Everyone's allowed an opinion.

Personally I can't stand either one.

I love my iPod. Had it since last March and the battery is still cool for 8-10 hours

I wouldn't suggest otherwise, I was just curious why the person wasn't pleased with it.

Then sell it, I'm sure there are millions of people who would buy it off you, you can then use some of the money to buy a cheaper, less popular player.

I wouldn't get that much of a good return from it now. Its almost a year old, bit scratched and i no longer have the box. All i am saying is that i've seen other mp3 players in action that suffer fewer problems, more efficient and are not bought because its a "fashion accessory"!

The iPod is generally a bit rubbish due to shoddy american workmanship. Sony's new Walkman looks a winner, and you know almost for certain that the headphones they supply will actually be of decent quality, and not those cheap white ones which say "mug me".

Same here. Best bit of kit I've ever bought. There might be better ones out there but as I've never used them I can't comment. As for slagging ITunes, why??? Any idiot can use it and it does the job.

If you can live with the awful buggy Sonic Stage and the fiddly interface, then yeah, get the sony.

is it falling to bits, or what?

mine seems solid enough, with the metal back and seems-strong-enough-to-me plastic at the front.

and i still don't get how something as functional as an iPod can reasonably be described as a fashion statement.

are there really that many people mugged for their iPods?

do the new walkmen have the same ease of use you get from the scroll wheel?

have sony sorted out their reportedly dreadful software?

Depends where you live I suppose. I have had one stolen but it was in a bag I left in a bar one night, but I guess if you live in a dodgy area then you're as likely to get mugged for your IPod as your phone or your money, so yeah it's a silly argument really saying they encourage mugging.

The white headphones are an advert that you have a £200 piece of kit in your coat pocket. It just gives a "prospect" mugger more incentive to mug someone if they can be guaranteed more of a plunder.

I happen to live in a great area, and never feel threatened around here (famous last words!)....but like most people, i do tend to venture to other less desirable area's. These places require common sense first, and that means keeping ALL stuff like mp3 players, phones, hidden.....iPods have though had a reputation recently of sparking an increase in muggings, so don't just brush it under the carpet so easily.

There is no point now is there? I have an mp3 player which is alright enough as it is, yes it has its faults, but has more than enough storage to last a lifetime in all probability. I only started this thread because i was concerned about the battery life.....amazing how its sparked all these Apple geeks to defend a piece of plastic!! All i said was that with the benefit of hindsight, i'd buy an alternative - its no big deal, don't cry about it!

No one's crying, We're saying either be happy with your player, or if you don't like it, shut up moaning and sell the damn thing.

The new Sony does look good but remember that the metal cased NW-HD1 weighed 112grams!!!!!
The new Sony is 182grams!!!!!

Yes the OLED is good but to me they have 'gone cheap'.

What keeps Sony away from the crowd is the amazing battery life. Weekends away it is pretty much impossible to drain the battery.

I'm not gonna sell it, because its just a device that plays music and the return i would get and the hassle of porting over all the music would not be worth it. All i said was that if it were May 2005 with what i know now, i'd buy another mp3 player....so breathe deeply...calm down....stop bothering me Apple boy and go cream over your iPod!

I wouldn't recommend the Sony Walkman range because, like the iPod, it relies on proprietary software to transfer music. Virtually all other MP3 players on the market will allow you to transfer music to them without installing any software, as long as your OS supports USB mass storage devices (most do).

This alone is enough to put me off buying a Walkman or an iPod.

Good points luvsnail, although I do believe you CAN use other software like Anapod? This you have to pay for though, or get some stripped down version on free trial.....iTune's is annoying if you wish to plug you iPod into a friends PC.

By that token how come you use a PC at all, must be really annoying if all the software is not build right into it! Also you visit digital spy yet it's not embedded into your systems' hard disc. I have seen you make the point before, I don't get why something not being build-into a system and needing installing is such a big deal for you, you won't get far with a vanilla PC with no apps or extra hardware installed! News for you, Windows needs installing itself.

Yeah simpler devices act as usb discs and you can drag files to them, but more advances machines like appple and sony require apps to make use of their extra features. Blame microsoft for not building absolutely every app imaginable into windows if you must.

And Mac OS comes with ITunes installed anyway so it doesnt require any additional software.
