The press got Barrymore so wrong
Prosaic
28-01-2006
The bile spewed at Michael Barrymore since it was first leaked he was going into CBB has been unprecedented

The Sun called him 'pathetic' - every joke he cracked was led with 'disgraced comic' or 'vile' barrymore complete with 'a source said ' ( aka 'we made it up') 'that Barrymore is on the edge'. It went on and on

My own view is that Endemol happily went aong with this. Big Brother is a freak show, and in MB they had their biggest freak yet..a disgraced man with severe personal issues..sadly it was even echoed on here , comments like

' i can't wait to see him booed when he leaves, he'll be finished'

' i hope he's out first and straight back to NZ'

The press didn't catch on even when he received a raptuous welcome on launch night. On here people suggested it was 'piped in' LOL

All that and the public voted him 2nd with 43.6% of the vote
(http://www.channel4.com/bigbrother/n...ry.jsp?id=1933)

Narrowly beaten by Chantelle who was always going to win after the producers overlooked the fact she's been sussed out by 3 of the HMs within days, Michael did fantastically well

On leaving the house he again received the loudest cheers

Good luck to Chantelle. She has 14 mins of fame left

For Michael..he's back next week on the Friday Night Project, the public have given him another chance and I'm guessing he'll have a big smile on his face when he wakes up this morning. Unlike Chantelle who only has BB, Michael can now use this as a springboard to other TV vehicles for his talent

The king of entertainment is back ! Welcome home

Nealry 44% against someone who was 1/33 odds on favourite to win up to 3 hours before the polls closed is very impressive for a man who is "hated" by the public.

Exactly. I've noticed the Sun is backtracking this morning already, praising Michael for 'making mincemeat of Galloway' - populist scum they are

The public have always liked Michael, because he's a genuine guy who's worked hard and made people happy

He got over 43% of the vote which is good considering if bookies are to be believed he virtually came from nowhere.

Chantelle 56.4%

Michael 43.6%

I'd call that narrow. She got 56% of the FINAL vote, not overall which people seem to get confused with

Wow, that's great. With the betting odds the way they were yesterday I thought Chantelle would've got more like 80% of the final vote. Well done, Michael, I'm so pleased for him.

29.4% chantelle
22.73% barrymore

Yes, as I said the other figures are for the FINAL vote

Those people franticallyvoting pete at the last knockings should have tactically voted for Michael to keep the blonde with the black parting out

Although I said I wouldn't vote because I thought it was a fix, I voted for Traci and when she left I voted for Michael.

You really believe this stats.. how does any GBP know it is not made up by Endemol...there is no way of factually finding out.

Whatever I find MB loathsome but then I always did.....luckily I have a remote for when he is on in future...

I agree. I also am happy that chantelle won tho . It was a very different journey for both of them. Its sad how the newspapers feel that they can, and have every right to, destroy someones life...on a whim. I used to like watching barrymore...although I wont lie and say that he made me laugh on any kind of regular basis in the house...but he was still very very entertaining. I would like to see him back on the telly again.....if he just isn't amusing anymore then feel free to remove him from our screens.......not because someone decided that the lack of any evidence means that someone has to be guilty...and that person is the "famous" person. Seeing michael sitting there on the stage shaking and manically giggling like a deranged loony (im not calling him a looney, by the way...or deranged), but it was both frightening/sad and fantastically heartwarming. He seems to be a broken man...im not sure hes ready to be back on tv just yet...sort himself out a bit first. In all its sad to see how the media has so much influence/control over opinions...to the point of sending someone over the edge, and into a bumbling wreck. To continue the muck spreading during his time in the house, just makes his (personal) victory all the sweeter imho. I wish him well and hope that if nothing else.....he has found himself again.

....I also hope chantelle makes something out of this as well. Michael seems to like her...and from the start I always saw it as barrymore seeing someone in the style of "my kind of people" person. Thats the type of show/person which made him popular...a people/public show...and thats exaxtly what chantelle was imho.

Good luck to both of them.

Yeah, what did happen to the "baying mob" The Sun said he'd enter and leave the house to?

I found Barrymore on CBBBM straight after the final more disturbing. Russell Brand was taking the piss out of him (OK we expect that) and he clearly didn't have a clue what was going on.

Still don't like him but I don't like seeing people fall apart on live TV.

I know what you mean. I couldn't work out if it was bewliderment or if he was being arrogant. It was uncomfortable to say the least. I put it down to the fact he doesn't live here and this was probably his first meeting with russell...and wasn't sure what he was going on about. Being approached by russell with a cheeky chappie comment, whilst thrusting a cattle prod mic under his nose was probably a wee bit surreal to say the least.

I said a lot of bad stuff about Michael when he first went into the house and aside from all the speculation surrounding what happened on that fateful night, I found him highly entertaining in the house.

If I recall correctly, the phone votes are independantly monitored due to the regulations governing such telephone polls.

You are correct. It would be fraud if the phone lines weren't genuine or were interferred with.People would go to Jail and never work in the business again.

Michael came across very well in the end.
