Why chav and what does it mean???

Why does everyone keep calling Chantelle a chav or 'Chavtelle'

I have no idea what a chav is but I know it's used as an insulting word, and I really don't understand what she has done to deserve an insulting title apart from winning when their favourite didn't

What do they say? "Council House And Violence"?

It's become the most overused word in the country now, and perhaps a rather depressing sign of how sheep-like so many people are.

I hate that word.

Almost half my friends are 'chavs'. And they really are nice - You know, never pick on anyone or any of that stereotypical veiwpoint.

It just means someone who is generally unplesant, 'Do I look bovered?', fake designed logo hoopy-earing type folk. Although I don't see why people always use it as an insult. But I guess there's got to be a bad guy in these stupid 'labels'.

Is that what it means

I live in a council house and I am one of the most non-violent people you could meet

I didn't know that's what it meant, I feel very insulted

Yes, sad fact, but it's true.

I'm afraid that's just the way people general veiwpoints are going. Stupid, in my opinion.

That about sums it up to be honest. It is now just an insulting word used for anyone you don't like. It has totally lost its meaning and there are some people who are annoyed at Chantelle winning so feel the need to insult her.

Am I right in thinking there is a town in essex with "Chav" somewhere in it's title?

I'm sure I saw that on some Julie Burchill documentary on Sky One

I hate the word.
When I was young the word meant something else. It was used by gypsy's (pikeys- another word i dont particularly like) to describe non Gypsy's
I.E - 'Go on up there ya Chav' loosly translated as ' Would you mind awfully getting off my land as you do not belong around these parts'

Yes there are a few rough people round here, my estate is a nice one luckily and most people have bought their houses, but there are some really bad roads. We don't use words like 'chav' though we just call them slappers and t*ssers

The exact derivation of the word is not exactly known, but here is one entry:
Quote:
“Main Entry: chav
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: the lower class; uneducated and ignorant people
Etymology: perh. Romany chav child
Usage: derogatory slang”

I don t know why they do it except as an outlet and a cover for bile and irrational hatred for someone whom they have no real reason to hate.

I did ask one of these people using the insult on Chantelle and the young people in the house to enlighten me as to whether PB, GG, DR and MB were also chavs. I didn t get an answer.

Our idiotic society has split people into different social segregations, based on clothing, social views and opinions, politics, use of English language and general lifestyle.

At least some of the primary groups:
Chav
Emo
Goth
Punk
Sk8r
Rocker
Townie
Trendies
Indie
etc.

It's just essentially another way for snobs to discriminate and look down on others.
It also gives people an easy way of insulting large social groups of people with little effort.

To be honest it's just like political parties

I am none, I just take bits from all
