British Acts in the America Charts
Does anyone know who was the last British Artist to have a #1 hit in the US? It seems that our acts can't even crack the top 40 there these days! We used to be so good at cracking America. What's gone wrong? Is it all down to that Hip-Hop garbage that clogs the charts up there?
I feel sorry for America, they seem deprived of good music. |

Most British acts are Europop trash or Indie/Brit Pop(ish), which America doesn't like.
Our charts are made up of a massive amount of American artists, and it's purely the fault of international record companies marketing stuff like 50 Cent to kids who buy singles. |

I think Dido went Top 5 with her single and album but no idea about number 1. I have a feeling we won't be waiting much longer, though.

Several artists have broken the American market, U2 are huge there Coldplay have done really well and went to No.1 with X & Y they have been in the top 40 for the last 32 weeks, James Blunt has also broken through, he was at No.7 with "Back to Bedlam" last week.

10 years ago Bush were a #1 act over there despite absolutely no interest over here.
Our music industry isnt interested in building up an artist, they only want a quick buck before moving on to the next thing to sell to 12 year olds, so its very difficult to do well here then go there. Plus the size of the place means you have to commit a huge chunk of time to touring to make any real impact. Having a #1 album over there doesnt mean automatic sold out shows. |

When you say "our" you mean these big global compaines, right? There's a lot of independent lables who want to build artists, through creativity, rather than press exposure and skimpy clothes.
I blame Simon Cowel et al for the state of the British charts. They are, as you said, simply here to make a quick buck and move on to the next. They don't give a sh*t about the artist; once they slip outside of the top 10, they get dropped, try to make a comeback, and fail - Liberty X? Javine? etc etc... Then we have the big American (or international, at least) lables. They spill out their crap onto the radio and TV and into the media so kids say "ooh, yeah, fiddy is ded cool, wohoo" and buy his stuff, probably not understanding anything which is mentioned in the songs. Perhaps they're even creating a false culture? I mean, how does a 12 year old boy relate to an ex-drug dealing, black American gangster who sings about sucking on "lolly pops"? nfused:My brother's into American rap music. I've heard him say things like "what you tripping for" ![]() I'm not bothered about international artists, it's just that our music scene isbeing flooded with American RnB. I used to like RnB, too, but I turned my back on it when it became... crap! |

Natasha Beddingfield's doing pretty well in America nowadays aswell. I guess if Blunt's doing well it proves that americans have just as bad taste as some people over here...

The interesting thing is that they buy far fewer albums than we do, factoring in the huge difference in the size of the countries, we buy almost twice the number of CD's. The number one selling album this week was Mary J Blidge selling only 16,694 units, with No.20 Madonna selling 6,779.

Whilst I sort of accept your theory, your figures are way out. Blige sold over 90,00 albums this week. Blunt sold 40,000 for 9th place! |

Radiohead tend to get near the top of the album charts in the US, when they release a new album. But they then sink back down the charts soon after.

Dino I think he co-writes his songs...blimey, just goes to show that two heads are not always better than one!! Aside from Lennon and McCartney of course!
