With all this talk of Paul Weller stating the Jam will 'never' get back together unless his kids were starving in the gutter.. Any fans of the triumphant trio that is the Jam? For those who dont know, the Jam were together in the public eye (altho they were together since they were 14) from 1977 until december of 1982 when Paul Weller retired the band before theyre music could become stale. The Jam is still thought of highly as they split up at the peak of their success!

I mentioned in the Paul Weller thread that I bought 'start' when it was released in 1980.
Imo, one of the greatest pop records of all time!

jam were superb at their best, loved the 60's influenced early tracks.

'all around the world' was my fav track from 77... 'funeral pyre' too was very much an overlooked class track.

I love Paul Weller and all his works!
The Jam were absolutely brilliant and All Mod Cons is still one of my favourite albums. Do have it as a CD but still prefer to play the vinyl which has the added bonus of rolling back the years!
Love In the Crowd and am so chuffed that he's started to play it live.
Also always liked Pretty Green.

The Jam are one of my favourite bands ever. So many great songs and truly brilliant lyrics. Here's an example - 'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight', one of my favourite songs:

The distant echo -
of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
the ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps - repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrappers and this morning's papers
Mr. Jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight

I fumble for change - and pull out the Queen
Smiling, beguiling
I put in the money and pull out a plum
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
"Hey boy" they shout - "have you got any money?"
And I said - "I've a little money and a take away curry,
I'm on my way home to my wife.
She'll be lining up the cutlery,
You know she's expecting me
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork"
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight

I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in its own existence
The smell of brown leather
It blended in with the weather
It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth
It blocked all my senses
Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight

The last thing that I saw
As I lay there on the floor
Was "Jesus Saves" painted by an atheist nutter
And a British Rail poster read "Have an Awayday - a cheap holiday -
Do it today!"
I glanced back on my life
And thought about my wife
'Cause they took the keys - and she'll think it's me
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry's gone cold
I'm down in the tube station at midnight
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight

The Jam are one of my all-time favourite bands. They've just got a sound that is totally unique.

I like all of their songs that I've listened to, but my favourite tracks by them are "In the City", "Going Underground", "That's Entertainment", "All Around the World", "Eton Rifles", oh and saving the best until last "Town Called Malice". What an anthem that is.

+1 on this song. My favourite Jam track. It's amazing how much he compressed into 4 minutes. It's like a radio play or short story.

An example of Paul Wellers genius, is this song could quite easily have been a poem, it's no wonder he turned to poetry towards the end of the Jams split.

Bruce Foxton is the reason I took up bass guitar, his style is truly unique. Im guessing the same could be said for fans of Rick Bucklers drumming.. he hits the drums like a machine gun but stays totally stationary, its a pleasure to watch him drum

Absolutely top band. I personally wouldn't say The Style Council were a disaster, a few alright tunes there... but pale into insignificance next to anything the Jam did.

The style council do nothing for me, to quote Bruce (Jam Bass player) Foxton, "It was a bit too wimpy for me".

Or to quote from the tears for fears song - sowing the seeds of love.. "Kick out the style ! bring back the jam !" which was a reference to Paul Wellers move to the style council
