Please everyone don't feel the need to comment on this thread it's just that I just came on and saw that a three page thread had been started on this topic yesterday and as I have to run out the door now I can't answer the posts individually and I thought some good points were made. And as yet again some of it is trying to pick apart my professional life I thought I'd clear the air and explain why I am a commentator on Big Brother and why I was on the news commenting on builders.
I am a behavioural observationist or sometimes called a life strategist. What that means is that I watch how people deal with certain situations in life and come up with ways in which they could approach them differently thereby making their lives better - THAT is what I do for a living. So people will call me up and say they want to change careers how should they go about it. BBLB will call me up and ask what do I think of the HM's and why are they doing what they do. TrustMark (or a company representing them) will call me up and say 'we have done a survey finding out that people are more distressed by builders than anything else in the world what can we do to make that easier'. I then sit down and come up with (in this particular instance it was 5) basic things that people could do to make the experience of dealing with builders easier.
I do NOT know about everything and never said I did. However I do know an enormous amount (because I've been studying, researching and writing about it for 30, yes 3-0 years). Yes sometimes it might look as if I'm talking about anything and everything but it isn't. I'm not talking about builders, I'm talking about how people react to builders and how they could change their reactions to make the experience easier.
As an aside. My father owned a building a company and many years ago I did a series for the BBC called Cheggers challenge where we went around the country re-doing, amongst other things, people's houses - this was before Changing Rooms. I was the person in the green overalls who did all the DIY projects - worst job I've ever had but that's another story.
I am not a rent-a-gob, as it is called in the industry. When you first start out you sometimes do a lot of work for free to establish - not your credentials - your capability of doing media work. Also when you see me on the news talking about builders I have also before that spent weeks working on the research that they put forth. In fact I am now on my way to a meeting to write research questions for an upcoming job which I will spend the next month working on before you see or hear me talking about it.
I am sorry to take up so much time but I suspect you will only have read this if you were asking the question in the first place. I wish I got to know more about the lives of some of you.
