Doctor Who - Will BIG News become OLD news?...

Like so many people, I litteraly jumped out of my chair cheering when I saw on the web that Doctor Who was going to return. And I'm now equally enthusiastic about the second series...since it has a new Doctor, a new breed of Cyberman and all that. But come say...series 3 or 4 - will the spark be worn out by then? Will everyone get bored with Doctor Who and end up being a thing of the past again? I'm probably being paranoid - but I'm sticking by the old saying that "everything that goes up MUST come down".

This thought first came to me when I talked about DW with my friends, and usually they would be talking about it very enthusiastically - but they just said 'Doctor Who? Ah yeah that was cool - anyway...bla bla bla'

What does anyone else think? This might just be pure paranoia but still, big news will become old news one day...

Its great at the moment that the press in particular seem to love the new Doctor Who.However this could also be its downfall in the future. If the ratings drop I expect the papers would be calling for the Axe again. This could be triggered by Billie leaving for example as I think the ratings will get bigger in the second series as the Tabloids have already had stories on the "close" relationship between Tennant and Billie.Personally in the new 45 minute format,I'd be happy enough to see Doctor Who run for between 7-10 years, depending on whether they used up the remaining Regenerations.

Don't want to be little miss sci-fi, but....

If they need more regenerations I can see 'them' having an assistant sacrifice themselves for the Doctor as per the Master stealing the curly haired lasses father's body.

On it's longevity, look at Star Trek. Median average for a franchise is 7 years. (Did I use median average in a sentance? sorry) Stargate - which series are we on now? Nine? It depends on the writing. Keep it good, could run & run.

As it once did before, after a good 20 years or so.

Understandable, as there is no Doctor Who promo stuff at the moment, no adverts, no trailers, no episodes. Not much to keep it fresh in peoples' minds. But I bet it will be a bit different once we get close to S2 airing.

And ys, viewing figures might drop (over the years ) but they will have to drop a long long way before people start calling for it to be axed.

I suppose after 4/5 series you could bring it to an end, like star trek. If it was brought to an end, I think there would be a lot of questions which could be answered, like who is the doctor, what has happened to the time lords. and in his final regenerations is he turning evil, does he not regenerate into the valliard, trial of a ti,e lord.

it is natural that there is a level of anticipation and excitement amongst existing fans of the show, and a gratitude that "our" show has returned.. this has to fade a little over time, but the great thing about DW is that it can re-invent itself in terms of it's cast and characters every so often - a new doc, a new assistant, new enemies etc etc.. there is always a way of keeping a show like DW fresh.. the only problem will be if the writing ever gets stale or tired.. if RTD keeps up the quality of the first series then i dont think we have a problem.. as for the lack of promo at the moment, i think that is a good thing; there's nothing like overkill to really put people off
