new sony amp
Does anyone know when the new Sony STR DB 1080 amp is due out, what it will have over the 1070, and how much it will be?
And are the new, curvier Pascal surround speakers supposed to be any good? (or are KEF eggs still the ones to go for here?) And will someone lend me the money to buy it all? Iain

I think there are new Sony products coming out in September because I remember odd comments made in threads here. Have you run a search to see if the amp comes up? If not why not try Sony direct via their website?
Sorry I cannot lend you the money at this present moment in time.

New Sony products tend to start to appear from September through to Decemeber. Popular products appear earliest and the more speciality products tend to come later in the year.
I have the Sony SB940 amp and although it's 'only' stereo, it's excellent, but at 400 pounds it should be half decent! paired up with some excellent B&W speakers it really kicks ass and there's no need for sub woofers. |

I've been hankering after one of these amps since it was the 930 - www.richersounds.co.uk are doing the 1070 for £299.99 at the moment tho.
we're getting a bonus at work end sep (first in 9 years), so I'm hoping to finally complete the home cinema set up then... Iain |

I have the 1070 which I don't like as much as my original 930.
The volume control is no longer motorised and has no led indicator on it. Also several turns are needed to reduce the volume. Automan. |

New Receivers
The product you're enquiring about is actually a receiver, not an amp - sorry to be pedantic!
Richer sounds sells the ES 555 model extremely cheaply (500 sheets instead of 850) The ES models are available in Black or Champagne and are not only the best things since sliced bread, but some are also reprogrammable like the 9000ES. You can buy new features as they are released which can be uploaded to the receiver. The QS models are beautiful in both Silver and Black. I agree with the sentiments of earlier messages - the older models are actually nicer than the current ones. I have a 930QS amp, which is by far the nicest looking, sounds like a dream and has all the sweets, including 2nd room, A+B Speakers and preouts, but no on-screen display. I therefore don't use it to switch AV (I use RGB anyway). Having recently completed my QS system with the 900 DVD (love it) to match the receiver, 930 CD and 940 MD I have no more scope for new bits to buy. I am therefore secretly lusting after the ES models, with a DAB tuner as well. If you can find a 930 anywhere, don't hesitate, just buy it. Just make sure it has the remote... Oh, and as for speakers - buy proper ones. You're listening to the sound, not looking at it! |

I do really like the pascals, but agree have heard bad things about them. (although the current set up is sooooooo bottom of the range (from 6 yrs ago, I'm sure they'd still sound v good in our smallish room!) Surely the KEF eggs are still a good enough bet tho? Iain |
