Ventilation needed?

Hi,

I think I've narrowed my choice to a Toppy, but would it be feasible to put it in an enclosed cabinet ?

We don't have a lot of room for another AV box otherwise.

I see that the Topfield has a power consumption of 8-25W but doesn't have a fan - could I get away with drilling a few holes in the back of the cabinet to let a bit of air circulate?

I don't really have a handle on how hot the Toppy get...

Would a different PVR with a fan (the Humax?) be a better bet?

Thanks

Plenty of people do put it in enclosed cabinets, and Toppys seem to survive in Australia pretty well, but circulating air is a good idea, I think.

Also, I think the 160Gb model will be slightly cooler than the 250.

They don't get excessively hot, really.

Nigel.

I have had my Toppy for just a week so I have been experimenting with all these issues.

I have mine in an enclosed cabinet on its own shelf with about 6 ins clear above, and yesterday I had the box on all day (14 hours anyway) and when I checked it last night the left hand side of the box was quite warm and the right hand side was barely warm at all. So I dont think there is a problem, have definately had other equipment which got hotter than this.

By the way guys whats the consensus with regard to leaving the box on all the time or not - is it better to do this or not?

Hi guys

mine is on a shelf in an enclosed space, aprox 4" above the unit. i left it on over night once and in the morning you could cook an egg on the top. have left the door open since then and its pritty cool now.
