People keep going on about Bonnie being lifted all the time, so excuse my skating ignorance, but does Bolero actually involve a lot of skating rather than reliance on lifts and other fancy moves that detract from the actual skating skills? After all, we know Bonnie is going to be in that final unless something drastic happens.

If it DOES involve a lot of skating, and if what people say is true, then surely whoever else is in the final has as much chance to win as Bonnie?

I don't think the version in the final will be much like the original routine - shorter for a start - but if they use the original closely as the model for the final it could make things interesting.

There was one lift in the original that was deemed dodgy because Jayne went above Chris' shoulder - remember in a bona fide ice dance competition there are no high lifts, throws, big jumps or long separations allowed as they're all technically moves from pairs figure skating. Although in the end, it was clearly deemed OK and they weren't particularly penalised. There was a lot of use of edges for gliding movements and some short steps using toe-picks.

I'll leave you guys to fill in the blanks on how this could affect the remaining contestants if they get to the final.....

How long was the original routine? I don't know about the moves, but I can't see them shortening it...they need to fill the show with only 3 couples left (I assume it's 3).

I think it was about 4 minutes (that's the rule at the moment I think and though rules change I don't think that one has)...

I appreciate that with fewer couples in the final they need to spend more time skating overall, but I wondered if they'd perhaps have another short routine to do during the show as well as given that none of them are full blown competitive skaters a single four minute stint could be pretty exhausting?

And they could be leaving time in the final for eliminated couples to come back and do something...and perhaps a bit more from T&D too...

The whole of the Bolero routine at the time was considered very dodgy, there were complaints and alot of disgust at the time. Previously the freestyle dance had to have severals eperate pieces of music but Chris decided to go against that, it had a lift that hadn't been seen before but more than anything the sychronization of Torvill and Dean was truly astounding, they were totally perfectly in tune with each other throughout the whole piece.

Lifts were relatively minimal as you weren't judged, then, on how many you did or how complex they are, that has changed now which is why most skaters do the same lifts.

I would say Bolero was 95% skating, so I would imagine whoever get to the final will have to be good skaters. Bolero is like poetry in motion at least it was when performed by T&D.

From what I've seen of Bonnie's SKATING as opposed to lifts she would not find the Bolero routine easy at all.

I studied the Bolero routine at the weekend (having found my mum's copy of Torvill and Dean's Greatest hits

It'll be very interesting to see what they do with the routine.

Be interesting to see how much the rules of ice dancing (spirit and/or letter) come into play as the competition goes on too - as opposed to all the crowd pleasing stuff that's more like pair skating

should anyone be interested there is a PDF file of the updated official international ice dance rules at
