... into a fuming ball of hate!

http://www.gigwise.com/news.asp?contentid=13108

Heh is this for real? I think my respect's gone for him. I mean, by all means if he doesn't like any of those rock legends fair enough but sounds like he's got an axe to grind with those personal attacks.

I think people are too afraid to say Paul Weller's music stopped being any good once The Jam disbanded. He's supposed to be cool you see and to speak against him makes you a Westlife fan (or something).

Here's a challenge: try and hum a Paul Weller song. The only one I can ever remember is 'You do something to me' and I'm pretty sure that wasn't written by him.

I find it very hard to believe. He used to be an intelligent and articulate man, and now he sounds like a crude macho oaf. Is he losing his marbles?

How sad and depressing.

Well maybe he does, but he did make some very good points in that article!

I think you must be getting him mixed up, Ruby, Weller has always been an arrogant cock. The difference is now he doesn't get away with it so much because he's by no means the force he was when he was in The Jam. Weller and Gallagher are kindred spirits (that's NOT a compliment, btw), it was Oasis that made him 'cool' once more by letting him play guitar on Champagne Supernova.

I blame Blunt for all this . It seems like just the mere suggestion that they should do a duet has caused Weller's mind to go into some sort of weird tailspin. I don't think The Brit organisers were EVER serious about it (I mean, it's daft isn't it?), but knowing Weller's volatile personality put the story about hoping for a reaction that would make headlines (only here in the UK, as Weller is virtually unknown anywhere else). They hit the jackpot this time!!

Why is it when an artist gives their honest opinion on other artists they get criticised for it? Why should he lie if that's how he feels about them? He's a music fan with his own subjective opinion like anyone else so he can say what he likes as far as I'm concerned. May be he'd wax lyrical about his favourite artists but that probably wouldn't make such a good story.

For what it's worth (nothing I know ), I largely agree with what he said (I f***ing hate Sting!).

*predicts lots more posts (probably from Queen fans) slagging off Weller's music *

Haha, how can anyone take a Queen fan seriously anyway?!!? Queen were camp-"rock", and forced down peoples throats.

I agree with a lot of what Weller said. I don't care how many "million record sales he has compared to xxxxx", the guy has every right to his opinion, as you rightfully said as a music fan.

Well perhaps I'm the one losing my marbles, because I could have sworn that I read a great interview with him about 15 years ago, in which he made interesting observations about both politics and music. But he certainly does sound exactly like Gallagher now. I knew they'd collaborated, but I didn't realise they'd mind-melded!

I guess that this could have been triggered by the Brits' suggestion. It's still sad and depressing.

And by the way, Paul Weller is well known internationally. He has toured all over the world.

This has nothing to do with being honest or to do with the respective talents of any of those artists. His comments are simply foul-mouthed and uncivilised. He might as well have just gone ahead and given us a demonstration of what he'd rather do than perform with James Blunt - it would hardly have been any more offensive or pathetic than this outburst.

Incidentally, I'm not a Queen fan, or a Sting fan, or a Bono fan, and if that's what you imagined then you're way off track. Aside from Paul Weller himself(!) the only artist under discussion here that I've ever admired is David Bowie. Bowie IMHO treads Weller's creative achievements underfoot, but that is entirely irrelevant AFAIC.

I think you're wrong. What is more honest than saying you think someone's music is shit? Sounds like you're just offended by the bad language. I myself find it hard to describe why I hate Sting without swearing .

Also, we shouldn't judge him on a few recent headline-grabbing quotes. I've read/heard other interviews recently where he had far more constructive things to say and he didn't seem arrogant to me at all.

Saying someone's music is shit was the least of what he said. That in itself does not offend me particularly.

Good! I'm relieved to hear it, and I'll put this down to him having a temper tantrum.

"Paul Weller explodes" I'm strangely reminded of that episode of "Lost" "Dude, you have a piece of Weller on your back"

Well, if that IS the case, he could have always turned the award down...like McCartney did . No.sympathy.whatsoever.

Is that an excuse to say horrible things about someone?

To call them all kinds of names (Yes I know I called him a name but that was just to show how silly he is).

This man will one day appear on Celebrity Big Brother to try and get his career going. Unfortunately, or fortunately he is a washed up has been. I know that phrased is used a lot, but in this case I'm cocky enough to say it's justified.

It's silly that there is one rule for some and another for the rest. Just because this guy is perceived as being "cool", doesn't mean he needs to be damn right rude.

Weller was never a "nice guy" in the sense of say Robert Smith. Politically, he used to be a bit of a working class Tory (in his early teens), then became quite left wing (still is AFAIK). But just look at the way he treated Foxton & Buckler after the Jam split - he hasn't talked to them (not a word) in more than 20 years.

I have to say I agree with most of his musical opinions, but I thought what he said about Bowie was a case of "people in glasshouses..." - he hasn't set the world alight since the Jam split.

Do you dismiss and character assassinate every artist who doesn't like James Blunt? Will you stretch to saying you think he doesn't deserve the award? As usual you're commenting on artists withought mentioning the music but rather other factors like their personality or popularity (earlier in this thread). Will you ignore other people's valid points and just respond with another chart position or sales figure? .

Oh yes I like it here, it's warm..... .

Maybe Paul can come here too, it might calm him down. Or at least beat the anger out of him. I'll call in the serviceman to do the latter.

The interviewer must have loved Weller ranting away like this. Cant say I agree with most of his opinions. He sounds like a good candaidate for the next series of Grumpy Old Men. I think the Queen fans will take particular offense at his remarks.
