Buying Orange Sims

This site (mobileshop.com) says that the Orange PAYG sim that they sell is “Compatible with Orange handsets only” surely it would work in an open phone, or are Orange only selling to be used in phones they have previously sold before? If so where can I get an Orange PAYG sim to be used in an open phone?

Also is that a good place to buy them? Are they reliable and how long is delivery typically?

Thanks

The reason Orange say that they are only compatible with Orange handsets is that more and more handsets these days are locked to a network, and they are not wanting the hastle of explaining to people how to get their handset unlocked. My wife and I have just bought 2 Orange sims and both are working fine in unlocked handsets from other networks.

Also, I believe an Orange SIM (or T-Mobile) won't work in a unlocked Vodafone or O2 handset unless they are dual band (most are these days).

Orange SIMs will work in any GSM1800 unlocked phone. This statement is an easy way to stop people trying to use one in a Vodfone, O2 or One2One locked handset or a GSM900 or GSM1900 only handset.

I've now had three Orange PAYG sims, all have been put in what were Cellnet and Vodafone ex contract unlocked dual band phones.

As far as mobileshop.com being a good company... I've used them many times and they are very good. Delivery is free and very quick.

Sorry. Are you saying what I'm saying, but in more technical terms, i.e. you have put SIMs for Orange handsets in Vodafone/O2 handsets, but they were dual band. In other words the Orange SIMs wouldn't have worked in Vodafone/O2 handsets, if they were single band?

Correct... an Orange Sim will only work in a dual or tri-band phone if it came from O2 or Vodafone in the first place. Single band O2/Vodafone are GSM900 only so Orange and T-Mobile will not work with them (although they will when roaming overseas, but that's another element to confuse everyone!)
