No digital sound

My TF5510 will not output digital sound. Using the optical cable ( new ) produces nothing... I have to use analogue interconnects. The installer told me that the optical output is future proofing and will only work when 5.1 sound is available. My Pioneer amp/receiver is correctly set up for digital sound & with CD & DVD, the result is awesome. I had hoped for the same with my Topfield.
Anybody any ideas? All info gratefully received.

Certainly on the TF5800, you can get optical sound output, even though there's no Dolby Digital broadcast. If the channel is just broadcasting standard audio, it will likely appear as PCM audio, and you may need to adjust the settings on your AV amp.

Often the AV gear will be expecting a Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, and will try to decode it, and fail. Some gear will automatically detect the format and switch to PCM instead, while on others you need to manually select the digital format - so try that and see if it works.

Also, check the soundtracks menu (I'm afraid I don't know which key that is on the 5510), and see if you have a choice of soundtracks, as that may make a difference too.

Nigel.

I'm afraid it only has an optical output.
