Religious storylines
I know there are a small few religious characters in soap, but has there ever been a storyline where someone who is more or less an atheist (or at least doesn't follow religion closely outside of weddings, funerals and christenings - like much of us I imagine) has turned to religion for the long-term? Or what about someone switching religions, like from Christianity to Islam?
Maybe a soap feels it would be boring for a storyline, but I think it could be done well, with enough drama potential. Or maybe they think it would be too tricky to pull off. Aussie soaps seem to love their hilarious "cults", Corrie even had one a few years back, and they do provide some excitement, but it's not quite the same. I'm not religious at all by the way, it just struck me earlier how soaps tend to shy away from the subject... |

Didn't Dot turn to religion in EastEnders because of Nick etc? I'm sure she said once that she found religion because of the life that she'd had.
Edit: No I think that I've got it wrong, this was the exact quote: "I couldn't manage without my faith, not with the life I've had". |

It's only really Dot Cotton, Emily Bishop and Edna Birch...and that Ed bloke from Corrie, but him turning to religion happened before he arrived.
Oh and Emmerdale's Reverend Ashtray of course. I suppose there's a danger of making it sensationalized, like that wacky Brenda bird from Corrie. |

EastEnders have also had a cult storyline with Sarah Hills and Brookside had one but I don't know if Emmerdale has had a cult storyline?

Didn't Sarah in Eastenders find faith. I thinking there was storyline about an older guy luring young girls by preaching to them but even after she wised up about him she still kept her faith.

Oh how could I forget the Sarah stuff...she was actually one of my favourite characters back then for some reason
![]() Well I don't remember the exact details, but I think it made her appear a little nutty, which was quite amusing since her future(?) boyfriend was schizophrenic. I've a feeling that storyline was slagged off heavily at the time. |

i remember that mark gottlieb in neighbours found christianity when he was about to marry annalise hartman and then turned to the idea of the priesthood, instead of being with her... the storyline was pretty big at the time and quite sensitively handled.

I liked the Neighbours 'Children of Barabus' storyline in the early nineties. The commune tried to hold Lauren Carpenter captive but she was rescued by Brad Willis and Lou.

The Brookie cult was a great storyline. I've still got the explosion of Barry's house and the aftermath on DVD. Two great episodes from a great program!

I'm surprised no soaps have a Muslim character. Or Jewish one for that matter. Are they afraid they'll be accused of getting it wrong?
Some critic wrote a while back that soaps can't have Christian characters without them being seen as nutters, like Brenda in Corrie. I remember that cult thing with Zoe, it was most unnerving. Especially as I was about 11 at the time! |
