Running on 4MB BY if that's any help...

I've been using SIPGate and Gradwell (not free so I'm sure BexTech will have something to say about me using them ) successfully.

The download rate isn't the problem - the old 512K connections would be more than adequate. It's the upload rate you need to worry about. However a router with good QoS handling can compensate for that.

It also depends what codecs you use - G711 is the best quality, but you wouldn't have a hope of running it on a 128k upload. On the 10meg (and 4meg) it works a treat - same quality as a landline.

VoIP works by turning you voice into digital packets that are transmitted over the internet, these packets are then reconstructed and turned back into into voice the other end.

Yes you get a new phone number for incoming calls.

No you don't have to have your PC to make and receive calls if you use a proper device.

If you don't want your PC to be on to make and receive calls then you can either use a router with built in VoIP ports, or and ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) which you plug into a spare port on your router.

www.sipgate.co.uk offers for no monthly fee an incoming number, of an area of your choice.

There is also www.voipstunt.com and www.sipdiscount.com .

www.voipcheap.co.uk can be used with an ATA/router, but you need to use the sip proxy of sip discount or voipstunt.

Gradwell as mentioned above is a paid for service, but is quite reliable.

One other advantage of a ATA compared to a PC - you won't start having silences and bad call quality if the PC decides it's got too much work to do!

My office laptop is appalling for silences and stalls in conversations if I swap between applications

There's never any mention of the company that I went with, www.draytel.org . The ATA adaptor is only £29.99 and everything seems fine. Have I made a mistake somehow?
