The only reason I can figure out is that they have run out of good storylines between Sonia and Martin. They have married them off. moved them into Paulines, have introduced the Chloe/Rebecca character - which at the moment seems to be hanging in mid the air. Is her adoptive grandmother ever going to reappear? Is she ill or just away on a long holiday.

So I suppose the scriptwriters have to think up something! and came up with the idea of "Oh!lets introduce a lesbian relationship. It worked in Brookside a few years ago so lets see if it works for EastEnders!

I don't know about 'running out of' good storylines for Sonia and Martin - I don't think they ever had any! They just don't work as a couple IMO.

I think Naomi is a good character, but I just don't buy the idea of Sonia as a lesbian, so for me that doesn't work either.

Re Granny Margaret, I believe she's ill - cancer?

I believe in future episodes at the beginning of March Sonia reveals her true feelings for Naomi! What will dear old Pauline think of that one

Yeah, will the grandmother ever appear or take Rebecca/Chloe back? I heard a while ago she was going to die, but no sign of that?
Eh I don't know.
I also heard Dawn & Martin were going to have an affair but definitely can't see that happening!!

How do you know EE haven't planned a lesbian relaionship for ages?- and not just thought it up.

I think it's a very good story.

i dont understand why anyone would think its a bad idea, if EE is trying to be "modern" and "relevant" then the story simply reflects what happens in the "real world", women leave their husbands for other women every day same as men probably do the same, love conquers all no ?

/me inserts cheesy midi file

I heard Martin and Dawn have an affair/fling too - as for the lesbian relationship - Sonia is just possibly Bisexual and confused.

Yet another out of nowhere story by the thickos who write for Eastenders. When has Sonia ever questioned her sexuality over the years..? She has consistently mooned over boys/had crushes/fallen madly in love with Jamie...this storyline is once again the result of lazy, uninspired scriptwriting. So unbelievable that it's depressing

Natalie Cassidy needs to get out and try other things, she's took Sonia as far as she can go and she's too good an actress to play her forever.

Anyone else notice she started wearing that army green jacket with the giant lapells around the time the lesbian story started?

Not that EE would stereotype a lesbian...

I also now believe that all lesbian relationships in Walford have 1 black woman and 1 white woman based on the last time they did this story...

I think he might love her but he can't fancy her!!! She's a munter! I reckon he married her out of guilt and to make up for killing Jamie!

I don't think that Sonia is/will turn out to be a lesbian/bisexual. I think the reason Sonia is getting so close to Naomi is because she is unhappy in her marriage and her life is boring some levels. I don't think Naomi's gender is relevant. I think the situation would be much the same if Naomi was a man. I dont think this will be a long term change of orientation for Sonia, just a passing phase until she works out what she really wants from life.

I never really thought Sonia and Martin had much chemistry and Martin looks FAR too young to be a husband, let alone a father, although I know this happens all the time in real life. The marriage was a mistake and bringing back the child of their one-afternoon fling is just a desperate measure. Something like this, in the world of closed adoptions et al, just would NOT happen.

As for the Naomi element again, Eastenders have always managed to have a gay character and one of the best storylines in years was that one in which Simon, Tiffany's gay brother, and the heretofore heterosexual Tony Hills got together. Although, Tony and Simon went off together in the end, Tony was more bisexual than completely gay - but it was a powerful storyline about a young lad coming to terms with his sexuality. This past week Naomi has also started to shine.

Most people are ni, so I don't get why Sonia being bisexual is so unusual.

Married to that lumpen charmless oaf, Martin, no wonder Sonia is attracted to bubbly Naomi. Seems obvious to me

Now THAT really stretches the limits of credulity. Dawn wouldn't go for that twit.. She's looking for a father figure, not a stupid boy

Firstly Naomi was bought in to stir trouble in the relationship. So the story has been building since August.
Also hwo do you know Sonia hasn't secretly fancied women? or maybe the fact that Naomi might be her first could apply. She does love Martin but she can't help feeling for Naomi too.

It's a subject that isn't talked about very much but I think people are subject to bouts of same sex crushes/ sincere admiration throughout their lives no matter how fixed their sexuality.

Just because I am straight it doesn't mean I'm immune to the beauty of another woman, on occasion ... (Traci Bingham running whilst wearing a basque anyone? )
nor immune to empathising with another woman's situation or her creativity to such a level that it almost feels like a physical desire.
It's easy to get mixed up about emotions if you are in certain situations or feel stale and trapped. Sonia is wondering if there is more to life than Martin (There is...) and if Naomi's path is worth exploring (it probably is not) that is all.

I hope Natalie Cassidy stays in EE. I think there is more scope for her there than she is likely to be offered outside it.

Me neither! If Naomi was a lesbian student nurse in training at a large London teaching hospital, would she be hanging around with frumpy, married Sonia in a craphole like Albert Sq and the Queen Vic for her social life..? I don't think so! And if she didn't know she was gay but just had "feelings", would potato faced munter, Sonia, really be her chick of choice with which to explore her sexuality..? Really? In the real world..? NOPE!

Natalie Cassidy should get the hell out of the show rather than be let her character be put through this far fetched, unrealistic pap of a story. Lesbian? Yeah, right!

Well said GM. I work with a gay woman in her early 20s who lives in South London and she seems to have a very varied and exciting social life mostly - but not excslusively - based around lesbian clubs and pubs.

I wouldn't presume to ask Kelly about the Naomi/Sonia situation but I very much doubt she'd want to hang around a dismal London square with an equally miserable munter like Sonia when she could be enjoying herself in nightclubs and bars.

As another poster has said, the use of Sonia as half of a lesbian pairing is just lazy writing. It would have been far more challenging and interesting if, for example, Dawn was revealed to be gay or maybe even the underused Tracy.

Would Peggy permit Trace to have a 'Gay, Lesbian and Transvestite' night' it is the QUEEN Vic after all!

What's this obsession with lesbians?

Being a gay man, I have to say I find lesbianism revolting, and I'm sick of the way it's being glorified in the press and in TV shows as a good thing.

If two men kiss and have a relationship on TV, is frowned on, but two women it's all "wahey!"

What's so good about lesbians?
