I agree Chrissy! EE is lacking some comedy! I love it to bits but it is missing that touch that Corrie seems to have. A 'Buffoon' as you call it lol would help!

Fred is the most annoying character in a soap( one of them anyway!) and considering John S. is a classically trained actor they are waisting him!!!

To OP :
Actually, can I just say that your point (if one doesn't get too carried away about the 'baffon' typo ) is actually a good one in my humble opinion. The 'buffoon' or 'fool' is more or less what 'low' comedy is about ('low' isn't a criticism, just a technical characterisation of its 'style' of 'belly-laugh hunting' rather than witty wordplay and the like). Fools are in Shakeseare, of course - even, in the Tempest, a 'dumb bloke and his even dumber mate' like Minty and Gary - correct 'order'? - who, you're right, just aren't that funny IMHO.Frank Butcher had an element of 'buffoon' about him on occasion. Les Battersby is a 'bufoon' BTW (interestingly, more so now than when he first entered the show - when he was a genuine 'rogue' - always a 'caricature' though ).

).When I said 'interestingly' I partly meant to refer to the fact that the character with lowest 'social status' in a soap will rarely be as 'developed' psychologically' as other characters. 'Low' comedy is nearly always 'at the expense' of characters with 'low social status'. Why is there the assumption that 'the poor' are more likely to be 'stock' characters than those 'better off' financially? Maybe it's so we can, through 'comedy', get a 'confirmation' that our 'society' is 'just' in its distribution of wealth?
