I've never skated in my life, although I wouldn't mind trying (if I had someone to prise my fingers away from the edge of the rink!).

I'm Canadian - so I was forced to wear skates as soon as I could walk. I can skate forwards, backwards and do the occasional (slow) spin - but I tip my hat to those celebs - I wouldn't be brave enough to take on what they are doing!

I think if I started going I wouldn't be able to stop! I've roller skated before years ago, but didn't like it as the wheels kept getting stuck!

They were cr*p children's skates or "cheap skates" as you might say! We had to strap them over our shoes and they either used to fall off or the wheels would jam up completely. I still have the bruises years later!

Almost as far away as you can get Podge. I'm from the opposite end of the country, a very small village in New Brunswick.

But I love BC, and spent a few years living out west after I left university - it really is one of the most beautiful places on earth I think.

Were they red and had the name Jacob or something similar?
I made mine into a skateboard
I used nails and ended up crashing into a tree whilst sitting on it and ended up with a nail in my back and was too scared to tell my parents as they had told me not to do it.
Ahhhhhh childhood memories

Were you a naughty little person by any chance??????

How on earth did you turn a pair of roller skates into a skateboard and how on earth did you manage to get a nail in your back?????

Sorry for laughing but this tickled me as well...

You'll love it. One of my best New Year's ever was spent in the rockies. A big do at a ski resort, ice skating with torches (proper flaming kind, not flashlights!)(and no attempt at jumps or lifts!) at midnight on the lake, mountains covered in snow.... a beautiful beautiful night. I remember thinking it was almost too perfect!!

Enjoy!

Yeah I was very naughty I never liked the word no
The roller skates came apart with a special key, I got a piece of rectangular wood and nailed the two half of the skate to the top and bottom, the trouble was I nailed from the underside upwards with a long nail and bent it over at the top .
I then sat it and went down a hill. I crashed into a tree (There was a tree in the middle of the pavement and I couldn't steer) shot backwards and the nail which had been bent over at the top went in to my lower back. My mum noticed the blood later on and was scared incase I had got tetanus as I had got the nail out of my dads shed . I was quite inventive as a child but not to the right things

I broke the bone on the bottom of my spine using those useless roller skates and I've never tried skating since!

I went last weekend for the first time in about 10 years or so - it reminded me of just how hard it is to keep your balance, and that's just going forwards!

I was a "rink rat" as a teenager, the ice rink was only a ten minute walk from home and we used to go as a gang 3 or 4 times a week and meet all our mates there. (there wasn't much else to do in winter in Blackpool in the '60s). the stewards used to chase us as we weaved through the holidaymakers on hockey skates.
Despite all the experience I can still only turn left and my T stop never progressed to a hockey stop.
I remember strap on roller skates too. I would pad the ankle strap with a couple of mums dusters and pull it as tight as possible. Blackpool prom was mile after mile of smooth tarmac and we regularly skated the 3 miles to town and back. Must have been mad.

I used to go every week when I was a kid. I had my own white Ice Skates and everything. I never had proper lessons, I just taught myself to go forwards, I think having rollerblades at home helped. Can't got backwards, although I often tried.
