I use the following...

Daisy... BBC 1
Custard... BBC 2
Oscar... ITV1
Wight... Channel 4
Oxford... five

Edit: No I don't, I just use the proper names, duh. What a stupid - but slightly entertaining - thread.

If I'm speaking to someone who knows the Freeview EPG, I say the channel name. If it's someone who doesn't I say the channel number. Simple really.

I'm sorry I really want to post something constructive here but really am unable too. The OP really has some OCD about channel nameing / location on DTT.
Perhaps I sometimes call UK Gold "UKG" or UK History "UKH" when I leave a note telling somebody not to change channel while I'm recording a programme, but thats it. I'm not knocking / making fun of OCD's hell I sometimes obsess about a touching a filing cabinet at work (static shocks) and touching certain items.

Correct, B4 is BBC4.

The normal way is quicker! :P
Do you still not see the logic behind the codes? B is the first B in BBC, and the number is the channel number:
1 B1 = BBC1
2 B2 = BBC2
7 B3 = BBC3
9 B4 = BBC4

The higher-numbered BBC channels need more explaining, but since they appear in the following order in the Freeview line-up, they are effectively (to all intents and purposes) BBCs 5, 6, 7, and 8 respectively.

70 B5 = CBBC Channel (effectively BBC5)
71 B6 = CBeebies - BBC (effectively BBC6)
80 B7 = BBC News 24 (effectively BBC7)
81 B8 = BBC Parliament (effectively BBC8)

N.B. CBeebies - haven't you noticed its logo features the BBC squares underneath it, hence why I've put BBC on the back end of CBeebies?

I can see the logic - I just can't understand the need.

The ITV franchise holder had to pay a Fourth Channel Subscription to Channel 4 (or S4C in the case of HTV Wales)
On ITV they said "Starting on Channel 4", and on Channel 4 they said "Starting on ITV"
The fourth button on many TVs, which people used for Channel 4, was marked ITV2.

As we all know, it took until the digital age for the real ITV2 to appear.

By the early 90s my coding changed as follows:
B1 = BBC1
B2 = BBC2
I1 = ITV
C4 = Channel 4

When Channel 5 (now Five) started, I was able to add another code as follows:

C5 = Channel 5

OK, I'm really confused.

If you say to someone "Pub B1 on", they'd probably say "what?"

Your reply: "B1" "BBC1"

Their reply: "ooh, ok"

So really, it's not shorthand.

I think everyone sees the "logic" in the codes, but I don't think (m)any people see the logic behind doing it in the first place - it just makes things take longer unless you were talking to yourself or someone who knew your codes.

Pretty pointless, sorry.

I don't get it, isn't it easier for your brain to just see the Channel Name?

I would think that this how a brain would work:

Channel 4; 1 thought.
C4 - whats that? ... Channel 4; 2thoughts.
104 - whats that? ... Channel 4; 2 thoughts;
or worse
104 - whats that? ... C4 ... whats that? ... Channel 4; 3 thoughts.

Maybe I will just say Disney, instead of Disney channel but thats about a short as I go - maybe Sports 1 instead of Sky Sports 1, but creating little codes just seems like more work to me.

I think the OP should be on medication...or if he is already perhaps he should consider changing it, it's clearly not working.

Why do you need shorthand, most people who watch BBC One, BBC Two, ITV 1, Four or 5 will normally say...

Put it on 1 , 2 ,3 ,4 ,5

and with all the other channels, we just say "put it on Bravo"

Well thats what my family does, dont know about everyone else
