Community Relations and Police channel? CRAP?

"Can you turn the channel to PIS please..."

Yes, YOU know what it means and so do the other people who have looked this thread which is no more than 8000 out of over 180,000 people on digitalspy and 65 million people in the UK. thats not a lot. So if my nephew went to my mum "Nana put on B6 I wanna watch telly" she'd be like "what the hell is B6, has your mum dropped you on your head."

A bit of history before we return to this ridiculous thread:

Originally Posted by Star Attraction:

Because they had to submit their plans for the new channels to the Ministry for Culture Media and Sport. They agreed the first plans for BBC4 but wanted changes to BBC3's to add requirements for certain genres such as news and documentaries.

Thus BBC4 launched first and BBC 3 launched later, once the i's were dotted and the t's crossed. There was no point in the team behind BBC4 sitting around twidling their thumbs with BBC Kowledge ticking away with absolutely no interest in the background

Quote:
“BBC Choice is the former name of BBC3. You see BBC Choice launched in autumn 1998, and relaunched as BBC3 on Sunday 9 February at 7pm. Personally why they called it BBC Choice at first has really bugged me - I feel it was totally pie in the sky. At the time (autumn 1998) I was surprised they called it BBC Choice. I was expecting them to call it BBC3, being as they already had BBC1 and BBC2, so BBC3 was the logical name for the BBC's third entertainment channel.”

BBC Choice was not the 'BBC's third entertainment channel' and BBC1/ BBC2/BBC4 are not entertaiment channels either!

The resaon it was called BBC Choice was because it was originally intended as an extension channel to BBC1 and 2.

Programmes like Eastenders, Tomorrows World and Watchdog had follow on episodes on Choice afterthey finished on BBC1 - a bit like what ITV2 do now with X Factor. There were behind the scenes programmes and extra sport and Kids programmes to complement those on BBC1/2 - Choice originally had it's kids programmes on Saturday afternoons to follow on from saturday morning programmes. It also had extra programmes for Scotland/NI/Wales.

The Choice name was apt for it's first incarnation but became less so as things went on

Anyway so what would the codes be for CNN, CNBC & Cartoon Network.... CN1 CN2, CN3?

I'm sad to say this but I have always thought this!

But, as one of the original posters said, some thoughts are best left unspoken.

Do you count steps as you walk up them also? Can't stop myself.

Its because CBBC is the main one of the two. When the CBeebies channel launched, it was seen as a spin off from CBBC, not as its own channel until some time later because everyone was used to CBBC being 0-14 year olds.

No, they were made up in order to make amusing acronyms!

Hang on a minute, if I want Sky Sports One, I need to think how many Sky branded channels are in the guide prior to it?
Sky Sports One becomes... S22, that's using a calculator to add it up to check I'm right.
God only knows what Sky Box Office channel 37 becomes...

It's called Sky Sports 1 for a reason. And BBC News 24 is called that for a reason.
"Are you watching the cricket on S23 tonight?"
"No, I'll wait for the highlights on B2 or S24 instead."
An example of a conversation that will never happen. Outside of Star Attraction's head.

Have just read back through the thread to find out what B7 stands for (BBC News 24). What are your codes for Sky News, CNN International, Bloomberg, CNBC and Euronews?

How about:

Sky One = S1
Sky News = S2
Sky Sports 1 = S3
Sky Sports 2 = S4
Sky Sports 3 = S5
Sky Sports Xtra = S6
Sky Travel = S7
Sky Travel Extra = S8
Sky Sports News = S9
Sky Two = S10
Sky Three = S11

That's all the Sky branded channels I can get (I think), numbered (I think) in the order in which they were launched.”

Things are a bit more complicated with the Sky family of channels. You've got:

Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Three
Sky Travel, Sky Travel Extra
Sky News
Sky Sports News
Sky Sports 1, 2, and 3; Sky Sports Xtra
Sky Movies 1-10
Sky Cinema 1 & 2
Sky Box Office

Therefore, the codes will have to be as follows:

S1 = Sky One
S2 = Sky Two
S3 = Sky Three

ST1 = Sky Travel
ST2 = Sky Travel Extra

SN = Sky News

SM1 = Sky Movies 1
SM2 = Sky Movies 2
SM3 = Sky Movies 3
SM4 = Sky Movies 4
SM5 = Sky Movies 5
SM6 = Sky Movies 6
SM7 = Sky Movies 7
SM8 = Sky Movies 8
SM9 = Sky Movies 9
SM10 = Sky Movies 10

SC1 = Sky Cinema 1
SC2 = Sky Cinema 2

SS1 = Sky Sports 1
SS2 = Sky Sports 2
SS3 = Sky Sports 3
SSX = Sky Sports Xtra
SSN = Sky Sports News

SB (followed by the number) = Sky Box Office (number)

How do you fancy that?

I can't believe this thread has reached 9 pages. Let's list every channel one by one and suggest a code (he jests)!

I have never and will never respond to a message sent in that manner.

T9 exists for a reason, I suspect people who use "TXT SPK" are simply illiterate.

As for this thread, It has to be one of the most amusing I've read on here.

Jim Royle would say "B1 my arse!"

Really, thats doubleplus good.

I'm reminded of this -

'The Eleventh Edition is the definitive edition,' he said.
'We're getting the language into its final shape -- the shape
it's going to have when nobody speaks anything else. When we've
finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all
over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is
inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We're destroying
words -- scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We're
cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition
won't contain a single word that will become obsolete before
the year 2050.'
