For some reason I went through a spell recently of listening to nothing but Bob Dylan. I'm not his number 1 fan, I don't like everything he's done but my God he's written some great songs....so what's your favourite?

I know mine are obvious but if I had to choose just one it would be 'Like A Rolling Stone' (about as perfect as a song can be imo) and I also love 'Tangled Up In Blue' (classic Dylan storytelling) and 'From A Buick 6' (love the way he describes his woman!). Obviously there are lots more but that's my top 3 and I'm sticking with it......for now......

Good thread, I've been listening to a lot of Dylan lately too, I love most of his well known stuff - Tangled up in Blue is definitely up there for me. I have just discovered Changing of the Guard - a great track, I couldn't really say which is my favourite though, sort of depends on the mood..

Like A Rolling Stone, All Along The Watchtower, When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky, Forever Young, I Shall Be Released, Rainy Day Woman #9, Desolation Row, Tom Browne, 7 days... just one's that spring to mind whilst I'm typing

My favourite Dylan song had got to be between Tangled Up In Blue and Visions of Johanna.

Also up there for me: Ballad Of A Thin Man, Simple Twist Of Fate, Subterranean Homesick Blues, It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again.

Don't Think Twice It's Alright as sung by Eric Clapton on the Dylan Tribute, just thinking about it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!!!

Although BD is a genius there have been some covers of his songs that easily outstrip his versions, besides Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower'. Has anyone heard Jeff Buckley doing 'Mama You've Been On My Mind' or 'If You See Her Say Hello'? He takes the songs to another level.

I got into Dylan through hearing Hendrix and at first I thought Hendrix's version was 100 times better, when I first heard Dylan I just thought - this guy cannot sing!

But then after listening to Dylan over time I suddenly got him and to me no one can hold a candle to him. There have been some awesome versions of his songs though, like someone else said The Dylan Tribute concert had some classics..

I too think that 'Dont think twice its alright' is his best track ever. Sometimes I have that track on repeat for ages both in the car and at home and there are not many other records that I would want to do that with!

Positively 4th Street, particularly for these 2 verses :

You see me on the street you always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck" but you don't mean it
When you know as well as me you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Acerbic or what?

I only got that song recently as it is only on greatest hits albums. Is it, by any chance, all about poor old Joan Baez?

I know what you mean. I got into Dylan via my brother who worshipped at the altar of His Royal Bobness and at first just thought 'this guy cannot sing!' My theory is that you have to work that much harder to like his songs (because of his singing) that eventually all you focus on is delivery and lyrics, rather than pitch and notes.

My favourites... every time I read someone elses I think 'ooh yes, that one too!' One that hasn't been mentioned is 'Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands'.
I got into Dylan through The Bootleg Series, so when I hear Blood on the Tracks, I'm always thinking 'That's not right'! Still love Tangled up in Blue though. Eternal Circle. Suze (the cough song)... and too many more!

The story I read was that Dylan wrote it about a hotel receptionist who was rude to him.

He took offence at something she said, went upstairs to his room and sat down and wrote those words.

Apparently.

The great thing about Dylan is that he even splits the vote amongst his real fans. I reckon he's made some of the best music ever but has also penned some absolute shockers. Like 'Romance in Durango'. But I know some people who reckon that's one of his best songs!

Dont think twice has come up a lot in this thread and I am quite suprised by that. Even though as I said before, it is my fav, I expected other tracks to be voted peoples best!

I wonder why we all like it so much ( I mean obviousley its a good song)

For me, its Dylans voice when singing those lyrics on that particular track, it touches my soul.
