GOT THIS FROM WWW.DRWHO-ONLINE.CO.UK (there's a pic on the site too)

Welsh actress Eve Myles is to play the lead female role in Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood. Myles will play the role of Gwen opposite John Barrowman in the 13-part serial, to be screened later this year.

The drama, penned by Russell T Davies, will chart the adventures of a renegade team of crime investigators who solve both human and alien mysteries.

Davies, who wrote the comeback series of Doctor Who, said he created the role especially for the actress.

The new series, which centres on the character of Captain Jack, is due to begin filming in the summer and will be screened on BBC One and BBC Three.

The drama is inspired by Doctor Who, but there will be no fictional crossover between the two programmes. It is intended for a
post-watershed audience.

Myles, whose previous credits include appearing alongside Sir Michael Gambon in a National Theatre production of Henry IV, appeared in the first series of the revived Doctor Who.

Russell T Davies is writer and one of the new series' executive producers

"I've admired Eve's work for years, and when she was able to guest-star in Doctor Who last year, it just confirmed to me that she was one of Wales's best-kept secrets," said Swansea-born Davies.

The "sexy, funny" spin-off, whose name is an anagram of Doctor Who, will be set in Cardiff.

"Doctor Who has a completely different feel to this kind of thing. This is set in the same place every week. It's a different sort of fun to
Doctor Who," said Davies.

"It's an urban series, very much set on Earth," he added.

It'll be interesting to see if there is any link made between the character of Gwen and that of Gwyneth from The Unquiet Dead.

If Torchwood is set in Cardiff..there is still the rift!

She could be a relative, I suppose, or a reincarnation...I doubt it though.

Given that 18th and 19 th C families of ten were common it wouldn't be odd if an awful lot of Cardiff people were related to Gwyneth by now . Wouldn't like to prove it though as welsh ancestors are horrible to find - hundreds of Joneses and Davies all born in the same place in the same year with the same name.......

I'm fairly sure the link between Gwen and Gwyneth will be explored at some point. Especially when, despite what they're saying about no crossover, The Christmas Invasion and Captain Jack as the star firmly place Torchwood in the Who universe. Not to mention the Torchwood - Doctorwho anagram.

You're right not to mention the Torchwood / Doctor Who anagram.

Agree with you about the crossover of Captain Jack's character though.

Just think - she beat Rachel thingy from S Club 7 for the part too!

I bet they do suggest a link between Gwen and Gwyneth in the show, although this may be done very subtly - perhaps just something us Who fans will pick up on.

I think Russell T Davies has said he's keen for there not to be cross-overs between Torchwood and Doctor Who (apart from Jack of course) so Torchwood can be, pretty much, a stand-alone programme.

I bet Gwen has visions, though, the same as Gwyneth did.

Thank **** it's not some pop star, actress wannabe. Although Piper had the sense to give up singing and take acting lessons before attempting to hit TV.

She trained as an actor before her brief pop career happened.

I assume they won't have the benefit of the Doctor's solve-everything plot device known as the Heart of the Tardis.
Doc, it's the end of the world!
No, it isn't, we've got the heart of the tardis.

Works every other episode

Think Eve Myles is a great casting decision given her performance in The Unquiet Dead...am I the only one in thinking that it is no coincidence in this though? Both characters have similar names and wasn't it said that the series is set in Cardiff...where the rift still is?
