What is the most "normal" song ever?
Here's a question that could pose some interesting answers...
What -- to you -- is the most "normal" song? I'm not asking for a song you love, or hate... just what you think of as the most normal type of song. I'm talking about a song that has no gimmicks, no particular "style", and is not heavily influenced by fads or fashions. A song that is neither old-fashioned or modern sounding. Just a really regular, middle-of-the-road, run-of-the-mill, basic song that people will listen to and say "oh yeah, that's just a normal song". A song that will neither offend nor excite anyone to any great extent. I'm looking for the musical equivalent of a cheese and tomato pizza. Or jeans and a t-shirt. Or the missionary position. Just the most standard, default, plain, un-accessorised song. If you can't think of any particular song... how about a time period (ie when was music at its most "normal"?) Well? |

I nominate the current single by the Magic Numbers. It meets all the criteria you mention.

What the heck is 'normal' and when did you last meet a 'normal' person!!
Thank god there is no such thing as 'normal' or life would be pretty boring. I love music and am grateful we have different genres which is thanks to the first teenagers in the 50's who refused to listen to their parents music. Sorry there is no way I could answer your question |

I must add that there isn't any "right" answer. I just want to see what people's perceptions of normal are.
The first thing that comes to mind is probably the only "right" answer. Twingle, I don't think the 1950s was the beginning of "genres". They had plenty of genres before then! |

I don't know if what you're asking is really all that possible - all music has some sort of "style" attached to it, so it's all going to be fairly unique in it's own way... it's an interesting question though
I guess the only way I could interpret the question is to name a fairly boring, dull song... something like an Oasis song... uninspired, run of the mill, 4 chords, verse chorus verse chorus structure, all rhyming lyrics... but then, people who like Oasis would probably disagree with me there

To answer my own question...
The type of song I consider "normal" for some reason is soft electro pop-rock from the mid-1980s. I have no idea why these songs seem more "normal" than others. Maybe because I grew up hearing them? |

Even avid dance music listeners must have trouble telling the songs apart these days, especially the radio edits. It's always fun to go to a club and see a DJ play a 3 or 4-hour set of the same old stuff. Sometimes I wonder if the DJ just plays the same song on repeat for the whole night to see if anyone notices. But no-one would ever notice... |

Mcfly - All about you.
Don't ask me why, to me, it's just a normal song. |

Anything by Dido is certainly NORMAL, can't remember how any of her songs go, it all blurs into one.

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something.
It's inoffensive but actually pretty forgettable. You could walk past the band in the street and not recognise them so I would say if you are talking about something just blending in, then this is your song. |

I second the McFly suggestion. When I first heard it it screamed 'generic'.

Aussie leg-spinner Shane Warne's tribute to Stargate SG-1, "That's My Goa'uld" is very formulaic...

I did a music course a while back. According to one of the lecturers the song that fits perfectly into the formula of what a song should sound like, verse, chorus, bridge, middle 8 etc is Shiny Happy People by REM.

if you listen to Blues song they were all structured exactly the same. Even their album songs - they always went: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus with Lee high pitched over the top of it. And their choruses were usually always structured the same way too. So any of Bues songs would be normal songs for me as a lot of bands structure their songs that way. Blue would fall into the normal category for me.

Moodswings-Charlotte Church, the song scares me in how unbad yet how ungood it is, there is just nothing about it, there doesnt seem to be a recognisable chorus, it isnt catchy or gimmicky but it is very listenable, i dont understand how it is like that but it is.

Never mind what's the most normal song, why would you want to find it? To avoid it?
