Indeed; the bugs section on Toppy.org.uk is terribly quiet since the last update; most of the recent posts have been Freeview or user issues too, rather than bugs.

We certainly had a rocky period with MHEG last year, but even then we did get a rather more timely response than Humax have offered their users.

There certainly are some outstanding issues on the Toppy, but with the current firmware, it's very reliable, I'd have to say.

I don't think you can score historic unreliabiliity here, snick. It'd be like saying don't buy a MK5 Golf because the MKI's went rusty..

My Toppy used to be noisy, but since putitng in a V120CE 250 you can't hear it at all.

My 9200T was similar in noise output to my Toppy post HDD update: very very quiet.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Toppy - and it does things at the moment that the Humax can only dream of BUT the Humax is still a damn fine machine and for me, only the reliability stakes, it has the edge....

Fair enough. But there can't be much in it. ???

I reckon I watch about 50% of my recordings on chase play - that's what you get when you have to rely on Thameslink trains to get you home

Sorry: 'First Capital Connect' or whatever they're called this week .....

Sounds like a bank and, let's face it, that's the place they're laughing all the way to.

I use my Humax to record stuff over the weekend (when I go home), so chase play isn't really, for me anyway, a big issue.
However, I do use this feature at weekends, so does 'er indoors with the Toppy, who frequently misses the first 10 minutes or so of 'Invasion & ER' on Sunday nights.

I'm with cookie, chase play is a must have feature, say you miss the start of a 2 hr movie and you can't start watching til its finished - what are Humax thinking of releasing such a box ?

Also capability to record based upon keywords in title is invaluable i.e. box scans regularly for things that match my search and automatically records them. Brilliant.

Cheers guys, this seems to be the most balanced thread for which to buy.

I think after this the Topfield is worth the extra cash and as first timer I think anything is going to be better than where we are now.

With the Toppy are the TAPS easy to do? is it just USB?

Thanks Tom

Post #24 covers getting the TAPs onto the Toppy and getting them started. Once you've done that, you just configure any options each TAP might give you via the TV. Some of the TAPs have user guides which are well worth reading before you even decide which you're going to use.

I can't see it mentioned here, but you also get folders to organise your recordings for the extra cash.

Where do you get the Taps from is it the official home page or is it secret locations among the internet

www.toppy.org.uk either has most of the Taps or pointers to where to find them

Trouble is people only read the end of these ongoing threads so things do get said over and over you are right. Apologies if you already know the main reasons that make the Toppy a killer box. Perhaps you could remind us of the counter argument ... is there is one

And of course he is right about wi-fi too, although thats reasonably difficult to achieve - unlike adding the extra user functions ("TAPs") which is dead easy.

If you are kind of techie then the wifi is worth the day or so it takes to sort out - with the right program I can watch programs while they are still ftp'ing to my PC, very useful if the wife is watching something else in the living room.

In Australia, you can order things like the Asus box pre-configured with Toppy-aware firmware, as part of an EPG system, which is neat and about as plug and play as you can get.

It's cost effective there, because there is no broadcast EPG (just Now/Next), so a much bigger market for creating a custom firmware and selling gadgets with it pre-installed.

I did toy with the idea of making up a pre-configured image for the Asus box, but it's a lot of hassle to get the development tools up and running to do it, and the WL500g deluxe is so hard to find at the moment, I decided it probably wasn't worth the hassle.

I've not been in the 'arguing case' frame of mind really in this thread, but I enjoy reading yours and other posts having a go at it . The OP opened this thread on both sections of this forum and I think he's made his mind up already. I thought my observations would have pointed him more in the direction of the toppy actualy. With twin tuner freeview PVRs for between £125 and £190 the toppy is more of an investment in money and time a llittle bit. This has come up a factor from some admittedly and I suppose no great suprise, but it doesnt mean you dont end up with your moneys worth if you do decide to buy a topfield. I'm practically quite sure of that.

So anyway, to recap - chase play, series record and wifi. Great things. Hopefully all wil be available with the Humax too within a few months. You never know
