Has anyone else noticed it

It has the main video as widescreen in the centre of the tele, then at the top and bottom is like a totally different background image

Some examples...
Beyonce - Check on it
Ne-yo - so sick
LL Cool J ft. JLo - Control Myself

and theres more!!!

As soon as I opened this topic, the video for Beyonce Check on it came on

Is it the same music director?

It looks so cheap and unprofessional, I don't know why they do it! America's supposed to produce expensive, glossy videos, not cheap trash you'd expect from a dance video with the budget of a fiver!

It's some style that Hype Williams has been using. I don't particually like it either.

It looks like someone has been let loose with a special effects machine, a bit like a kaleidoscope or something. I find the new Beyonce video hard to watch, and not just because the song's a bit rubbish - it hurts my eyes after a while.

I guess it's just the new style of hip hop videos. A while back, it was all about driving around with your homies before hitting a barbecue/pool party; then it was all about performing the song in several small rooms lit with loads of lights (see Busta Rhymes - 'WooHah! Got You All In Check' for a better explanation than I can give ); then everyone was having dance-offs in nightclubs. Someone will 'invent' another style in a few months, and hopefully it won't look so tacky...

this type of effect has been used in Bollywood videos for ages, I hate it, it gives me a headache.

Hype Williams, it seems has always shot videos with borders. Before they were just plain white, but now he's got inventive

Letterboxing is annoying enough, but filling the letterbox areas with patterns or colours is just disgusting.

In an ideal world, all 16:9 material would be broadcast in true anamorphic 16:9, but until the TV channels catch up, letterboxing is best restricted to plain black bars.
