Well said. The problem is Gaynor doesn't do it particularly well so no one notices.

I think Gaynor does her lifts very well indeed

Gaynor and her partner also put a lot of emotion into their skating routines and they tell a story - which is another very important element of ice dancing. Jayne and Chris were masters of this - even from off the ice and staying 'in character' until the end.

Just watch the Olympic/European/Worlds ice skating - listen to the commentators. There are several elements on which the judges mark - there's the technical (lifts, difficulty of the steps etc), and there is also the 'performance' facet, which includes showmanship, storytelling etc.

I have yet to see Bonnie and her partner put any kind of emotion or storytelling in any of their routines.

Bonnie is spectacular at the lifts (because she's very supple, as a dancer would be - which has undoubtedly helped her), but that is only one part of a performance and she should know that, coming from a theatre background. I also think the judges have been too unstinting in their praise (and given extraordinarily high marks on the occasions when she didn't deserve them) and that has turned people off. Sad but true. I actually liked her at first but have been increasingly turned off partly because of this and partly because of the lack of actual 'ice dancing'. Gaynor may spend as much time 'attached' to her partner (although this is not always true) but this is ice dancing and that's an element of it. But she doesn't look as if she's actually being 'carried along' by him. Instead, they look like two equal partners. That doesn't seem to be true of Bonnie unfortunately.

I like Bonnie. Really. I just think that Stefan and Gaynor have more going for them in more of the elements. Their partnerships stand out on the ice and they can do 'romantic' and 'funny' routines whereas poor Bonnie is left with spectacular lifts and not much else. It's a pretty 'one-note' performance.

When I watch ice skating, I want to be carried away (pun not intended!), with the beauty and the romance (or the humour!), of it all - and whilst that has happened with others (Gaynor, Stefan, David, John (of course!), even Kelly), that has not happened to me when watching Bonnie. I gasp in awe at her lifts, of course, but that's all there is. Which is a shame because she could do so much more.

And 'Bolero' is not just about the moves. It is also (importantly!), about the 'story' of the two lovers who climb up a volcano to throw themselves in (dumb thing to do, in my opinion! But at least it would be quick!) - and at the moment, both Gaynor and Stefan and their partners are more capable of getting this across than Bonnie and her partner.

It's a shame there are so many threads attacking poor Bonnie - I'd like to see some of these people try what the celebrities are doing ! It's always easy to be an armchair critic. Part of this has, of course, been engendered by the judges' somewhat biased marking but there are always those who will verbally attack the people taking part in this without reason. I don't see any need for it at all. It seems very immature and pointless. Unfortunately it then makes some of the Bonnie supporters turn on the other contestants - which is patently unfair as it's hardly their fault that forum members are carping about one of their number!

They've all done extraordinarily well. Let's remember that and stop attacking *all* of them.

Those that can - do. Those that can't become critics!

IMO I think Callys mums post deserves a 6.0

Yes I agree - ice skating is an incredibly difficult skill to master and hats off to everyone who has taken part - I will really miss the programme when it finishes on Saturday (still wish John Barrowman was in - but thats not to say Stefan shouldn't be there because he derserves where he has got to).

I like Bonnie and admire her routines but really can't understand some of the top marks she has received and that has led to her downfall with the viewing public - really can't understand why the judges don't realise that if they praise someone to the hilt it puts the audience off and if they slag someone off, the audience immediately rallies to support them - fair, constructive non-emotional judging is called for but rarely is achieved (this applies in lots of sports that require judgement rather than against the clock or goals scored)

Anyway good luck to everyone on Saturday - we have to record the programmes or watch them on Sunday mornign as we have been invited to a Wedding that day - most inconvenient - I missed that X factor final too because of a Christmas party - must get my priorities sorted !!

I think so too

A very good post from Cally's mum

I don't dislike any of the remaining contestants or the past contestants, apart from Kelly, sorry just couldn't stand her on the programme. However Gaynor and Dan are my favourites and I would love to se them win, if they don't though I won't be too sad. I think they have all done exceptionally well, and a lot of that has to be thanks to their partners and Torvill & Dean for the help with the Ice Skating training.

Can I add, and I have said this before, that apart from the judges over the top praise of Bonnie at times, thus probably turning some people off her because of this, surely Bonnies Ice skating partner is as much to blame for implementing so many spins and lifts in their routines, so why isn't he getting any comeback ? He probably realises the air acrobatics will bring the marks from the judges. He is using Bonnie to get to the finals and it's worked, he should have helped her improve her ice skills on the ground more. I am sure she could have managed if she had been helped more in the groundwork.

I've yet to see anything other than Gaynor's usual below par acting.

Though I was glad Stefan stayed in over John, my ideal final would have been Stefan, John and Bonnie or David.

This doesn't always work that way. Praising and criticising of different contestants at strategic moments has successfully led to the result the judges have wanted in many reality TV contests including some where unfortunately people's futures and careers are dependent on it.

But its not only up to Bonnies partner what they put into a routine, T & D work out the routine and have input as to what is included in their routine, just as KB has input in Gaynors routine

So Bonnie and partner can not be all to blame for the content of their routine

I must be watching something different, in their very first performance, it was exactly that which made me notice them and i think they have done it as much as anyone throughout the series. Maybe i'm in the minority, but i've seen enough emotion/storytelling from them.

I don't think Torvill and Dean do set the Ice routines, as many a time when it has shown bits of rehearsals they are surprised at some of the stuff the stars want to attempt as being a tad too ambitious and can they pull it of. I believe Torvill and Dean are there to tutor, and help with their Ice Skating expertise. I think the stars and their partners set the actual routines, so Bonnies partner would be most to blame if they lose out in the final, for not insisting they do more groundwork imho.

Matt commented on GM TV that T &D had input into the routines
