Winning Big Brother can open many doors. Not only does the lucky housemate find themselves £70000 richer, but they are also given the opportunity to turn their hand to all manner of weird and wonderful experiences.
Kate Lawler, the gorgeous winner of BB3 jumped at the chance to join OK! And spend an eventful - and totally exhausting day - America's Cup Yacht sailing on the Solent, taking along two of her best friends, Emma Chard and Jo Oates. On this magnificent 76ft racing machine, which was specially built in 1995 and competed in the America's Cup in San Diego. Kate entered the spirit of things with the same gusto that saw her winning BB3. "Oh my God" when first confronted with the daunting prospect of taking control of the yacht - and after a very flirtatious briefing session with the six-man crew - Kate took the wheel for the day ...
Did you enjoy your sailing jaunt Kate?
I loved sailing. It was definitely one of my favourite experiences so far. I was a bit scared before, worried about getting seasick, but as soon as I took control of the wheel it was so much fun.
Do you see yourself enjoying life on the ocean wave?
I wouldn't mind sailing again, but I couldn't do it as a hobby as I'd end up chucking up all the time with seasickness! Every time we went downstairs to get changed, I kept having to pop my head up to look at the shoreline to stop from throwing up. If I could lay there in my bikini with my mates, letting the gorgeous sailors do all the work, then definitely.
Its been a few weeks since BB3. Are you over it yet?
I've had lots of time to chill. I never expected to get this much work & I've been going down the gym a lot to get my figure back for my holidays, so its pretty well balanced. I've had a few girly nights out and managed to catch up with all of my mates and family, but on the whole its been a top experience so far.
Did you find it weird to see yourself in the headlines?
It's strange, especially when my sister phones me and tells me the papers are having a go at me again. The other day I was on the train and some geezer asked my if I'd made any money, and I went "No I'm actually going to sign on soon mate" and the next day a paper had printed how I was whingeing about being skint and was heading for life on the dole. It's just ridiculous at time, but I don't take everything to heart.
What's been the most exciting thing to happen to you since BB3?
I did my 1st spot of tv presenting today for Living TV, and really enjoyed it. And I covering for Steve Penk on Capitol, for a whole week so I'm really excited. On my own as well, and its great doing Radio as at least you can go in looking like a tramp - that is, unless I'm interviewing some gorgeous pop star.
Have you watched any tapes of BB3 yet?
Oh yes, my parents taped everything. I thought it was so coo watching people being evicted - especially PJ. He really lapped it up and went for it like a real trooper. His was the best eviction so far, bar the last night obviously!
I was very shocked at what I saw going on. I couldn't believe how much Alex and Sandy were slating people - it was frightening. And Alex continues to slate me and doesn't want to know anybody from the BB experience. I think he's totally bitter that Jonny and myself beat him and he needs to get a grip. I don't want to have a pop at Alex but he's acting like a bit of a sore loser really.
Have you treated yourself to anything extravagant yet?
Yes, my house! I've bought a flat near my parents and it's all so exciting. It looks out over a lake with a huge balcony. Very s****y indeed. And yes, I've been to Gucci and splashed out on a gorgeous handbag and stuff.
Have you had a lot of male attention?
I met my oldest fan the other week- a stunner in his seventies. I was in Edinburgh doing a talk at the TV festival and this lovely bloke came up with an icecream and went "I voted for you. I knew you'd do it. Can I have your autograph please?" But I do get a lot of guys coming up which is hard when I'm out on a night with the girls. I get letters from blokes all over the country that say stuff like "You should win Rear of the Year, you've a cracking bum"
Your mates were photod flashing their derrieres on a night out...
They weren't my friends. Those girls weren't with us that night, as we met them at Attica and they came to Emporium with us. I'd actually left by the time they dropped their knickers and everyone wrote that it was my twin sister, which is bang out of order.
What about your celebrity BB fans? Have any of your own idols congratulated you?
I got a letter from Fatboy Slim who said he was in love with me and was going to leave Zoe! He went on to write how he'd love to meet me and asked for a signed autograph. I just couldn't believe it! Even Brian Dowling said he felt like he was with someone really famous, God love him! It's the best when a celebrity tells you they voted for you as well. I did a shoot with Dannii Minogue, Jenny Frost, and Cold Feets Hermione Norris the other day, and there were so lovely to me. Hermione asked for an autograph for her mate and I was like "Oh my God! - this is so surreal"
It's been rumoured that Duncan from Blue has been bombarding you with text messages. Care to spill the beans?
There's been massive speculation about us two and its just not true. He phones me quite a lot a we;'I've become good mates, but he's just so not like that/ He phoned my on tour from Malaysia the other day, ant it's more like he's giving me advice on how to handle things, telling me he'll always be there if it gets too much for me. Do I fancy him? (Blushes) Oh no - we're just like friends now.
You are said to have been overheard in a local pub wishing Jade would drop dead - what really happened there?
Jade and I spoke the next day and had a giggle about it, as she knows as much as I do about the press blowing things out of proportion. People should realise that I like to joke about and take the mickey. I did say, "Yes the rumours are true. I hate the cow and I've a bullet proof vest on" but I was just playing it up. Then I went on to say how I thought she was really sweet and then did impressions of all the housemates and told funny stories. But they didn't want to write anything about that, oh no. They press were outside all night, so I gave them what they wanted and to say I wished she was dead is just plain nasty.
In your documentary, The Winners Story, Jade acted as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth after slating you in the papers. How did you feel about that?
When she arrived, there was tension in the air as she had just announced that she wanted to chin me. But she explained she never said that and, although that day she did act like a bit of a diva, the thing with Jade is she's really young and she's totally enjoying the experience. When she said to me about my hair looking better blond than black, I didn't know if she was having a dig or being Jade. So when she waltzed in harping on about having a personal trainer, I did get one in by saying "What? To lose all that weight?". Me and Jade get on and we always have a giggle together when we see each other, but it's not like we're going to be bosom buddies or anything.
It was also claimed you stormed out of a pub quiz after the compere made a few jokey comments about you...
Oh my God, that is such rubbish! When I was leaving the pub where my mate works, she asked me if it was OK if they said "This is Big Brother - can Kate come to the diary room" so I laughed and left the pub to go on for a meal across the road. The next day it was all over the paper that I threw a strop and barged out. How stupid is that?
So what's the goss on you and Spencer?
This is the deal with me and Spanky - I really fancy him and always have done. And now Spencer has told me that he fancies me! When he told OK! He didn't fancy me, I wound him up about it and he said it was because he didn't like the way I was with Alex. We like each other, but we're just mates and nothing has happened yet.
It was reported that you spent a romantic weekend away with Spencer at his local boozer...
It wasn't totally true. We spent a lovely day at his local pub, did a bit of fishing, watched the sunset, then went for some dinner and I left. We had a really nice day together and he's been a different person from the one he was in the house - much better company yet still as laid back.
In BB you admitted you found him totally gorgeous. Is that still the case?
He's a funny one. We have this brother-sister thing going on, where he's being totally horrible to me in the nicest way possible. Guess what his nickname is for me now? Buttmonkey! Can you believe that? He actually just texted me and said he's abit down as he's got no one to be horrible to today! Bless him.
Have you had another snog yet?
No. We're just mates at the moment. He came down to my house and ended up in the garden with my dad supping beers while I watched Jerry Springer with my sister. We enjoy each others company but we're just mates who are seeing how it goes.
What's next on the horizon?
The radio show is the main thing. Especially if its got something to do with sport, as I love my footie - especially Arsenal! Sit me down to chat with any attractive famous bloke and I'll be in my element. I mean, things can't be any madder that they have been, can they!
