Exactly right.
I agree that hand held mobiles should be banned. You cannot compare talking to other passengers, tuning the radio or even smoking to something that ties up one hand for a substantial amount of time. Even in an automatic, that still leaves only one hand for steering, and that isn't safe.
I sometimes see on the motorway cars slowing down behind lorries when you'd normally expect them to overtake. When you get closer you realise they're on the phone, and the driver doesn't want to do something difficult like changing lane. It's good that in these cases they slow down rather than risk it, but that clearly shows how dangerous it is in the first place.
