What actually concerns me more is the nature of the punishment, which I saw suggested in one paper was to be a £30 fixed penalty, like a parking fine.

No points on your licence, so, as per bloody usual, the well off will continue to flaunt the regulations and just pay up, whilst the poor will have to stop doing it.

If it was a "points" offence, at least the penalty would be meaningful to both rich and poor alike. Here endeth the sermon on communism!

There is the option to fine the company they work for as well, although if the guy is a high level manager\director they won't have any problem paying the fine.

Although I agree with the ban on hand held phones there still no mention of all those other users who are using two way radios in there vehicles while they are on there own. They are holding a conversation regardless of the nature of the call but it look like it the poor hapless motorist who will end up bearing the weight this law.

We used to manage fine without mobiles a few years ago. We used to make every effort to turn up on time! Today, they are part of every day life so to raise the question of banning them is complete nonsense.

If you're talking about usage in a car:

Handsfree (the headphone type) are more dangerous than using the phone directly as they are more cumbersome.

The only safe way to call is to use a proper car kit. Which is no more dangerous than changing the radio station and talking to someone else in the car.

Some new phones have features such as a 'magic word' where the phone will automatically answer or can dial preset phone numbers by voice command. This means the phone is completely handsfree.

Another idea is Wildfire - the virtual PA answerphone from Orange who once connected (pressing just one button on your phone) can tell you all your messages and dial any number for you.

“ I agree with the handsfree only part, unless its an automatic car, in which you do not need the other arm to change gear.. so its more free (although i suppose may still be need at sometime)”

You should always have two hands on the wheel whenever possible - even in an automatic. If you needed to avoid something on the road or in an accident, you would not be able to steer the wheel effectively with just one hand.

The above is common sense. We always hear about speeding or the use of mobiles whilst driving, but I think a major danger on the roads is the fact that we simply drive too close to each other - especially on motorways. We could all drive 90 mph quite safely on the motorways if we kept our distance.
