Thomson started skipping
Steve Green

Hi,

I've noticed that I'm starting to get jumps on recordings, and it seems to be getting worse (several times per hour)

I read the thread about the hidden menu, and the ability to format the HD. I wondered if this might help the skipping.

Has anyone tried this yet, and if so is there a downside (apart from losing any stored recordings obviously)?

Thanks,

Steve

Skipping is most likely due to poor reception during the recording, in my experience, so formatting the HDD wouldn't benefit that. There is an option inthe menu to change the way that the Thomson handles error frames to "mosaic", which I prefer.

Try changing to that and then watching the recordings - I think that should make it obvious whether it is a reception issue.

I've not tried the format, but I may be wrong - YMMV etc etc!

Hi,

I don't think it's a problem with reception, I've never had breakups watching live programmes, and it doesn't make the typical squawk noise when Freeview gets interrupted, it just skips as if a second or two has been lost.

I'll try the mosaic setting - see if that makes a difference, otherwise I'll try a format once I've watched everything on it.

Cheers

The behaviour with recorded programmes is different than with watching live, so that may explain why it appears different - it does tend to just skip forward a few seconds, which is why I prefer the mosaic setting as it tends to keep the time more linear (if that makes sense!). I suppose when watching it live it can't skip forwards instantly as that would require seeing into the future!!!

Hi,

I get exactly the same problem with my DHD4000 - doing the strange skipping during playback of recordings. If I attempt to go backwards and replay the skipping section it skips in the same place (i.e. it is a problem with the recording rather than playback).

Would be interested to hear if the 'mosiac' setting (where do you find it???) work.

I think it's called Macroblocking and it's a setting in the engineers menu which you can get to from Menu -> Setup -> Technical help and then press 2846 in quick succession then Startup and it's the other option on "Video error".
