Does anyone remember that spin-off during the early days of EastEnders (1988 maybe) showing the Square during the War right up to the present day, thought maybe this thread could be an extension fo what went on in the Square right up to today. As it was mentioned there would possibly be a spin-off regarding Johnny Allen's younger days...

What do you reckon ?

Just managed to download Civvy Street from a file-sharing program (well, it isn't available anywhere!). Very excited!

That's so cool, i don't mean to sound rude but would you mind sharing ? As our old VCR completely chewed up the original recording

Any ideas on how bad Johnny Allen must have been in his youth?

Haven't seen Civvy Street for quite a while now but I really enjoyed seeing the antics of a young Lou, Ethel etc.

It was set during WW2 and also featured Lou's mum - played by the same actress who played Mike's mum, Nora - unless I'm getting forgetful.

It was great to get some background to some of the earliest characters in Albert Square - 'Reg Cox' had a much bigger role than he did in the main series.

It wasn't a 'through the ages' programme though, it was set during WW2 and ended around the time that Lou announced she was pleased about the founding of the Welfare State.

I obviously agree lol, so where could our spin-off of Alber Square begin? Any ideas

I have a copy on DVD, it's really interesting to note how much detail Keith Harris went to making the Square look like the War years - he changed the streetlights, painted the Vic green, took down the railings around the Square, added the building that were demolished by the war - really amazing stuff.

IIRC the Vic was green at the time in the program. I remember watching it and thinking "Why havent they changed the colour".

Did we see the inside of the Vic in it?

Yes, she was - although it's been such a long time since I watched it that I can't remember what part she played. She looked very young though.

Bronze Bully would be the best person to answer this, but iirc, they used the exterior of the Vic as it used to be in the beginning, before it was repainted to the new colours we see today.

Hopefully, BB or someone else will be able to give you some more info on this as my memory is patchy (can't think why! )

Did they release it on dvd then, BB?

I haven't seen this in a long time and would love to watch it again.

Don't wanna get in trouble by naming it outright, but the filesharing engine CharityDingle used to download it was the one that sounds a bit like a donkey.

I still haven't watched it yet, we got it at the weekend but there's far too much regular soap on tv to fit the spesh in!
