Ok, i have been reading alot about VOIP and my family seem very intrested. 1st i would like to know which server is better as there seem to bee soo many. 2nd, how much will it cost to call a lane line or mobile in india, and 3rd, do we get out own personal phone number for the VOIP service?

Depends what you're after - different services offer different benefits. SIPGate (used by many on here) offer a reasonable service for very little money, but there are also a few of us who have had intermittent problems. Others are a bit more pricey but possibly slightly more reliable.

Depends on the service you use. If you can find an Indian provider then you'll probably get the cheapest deal - if you do it right you won't be charged anything more than the cost of a local call - if not free.

In general yes - but different services offer different types of numbers. Some free services only offer an 0870 (in the UK) number while others (SIPGate) offer a free geographic number. I believe some providers also allow forwarding so you can setup a bunch of numbers to point to the same end point.


If you want to make things simple for the family, you might want to consider using an ATA and QoS supporting router so you can just plug in a standard phone without having someone tie up the PC.
