"Doctor Who? Doctor Who?"

I can see it already. And hear it.

FWIW, I think he's hiarious in Phoenix Nights and some of his stand up routines are also top notch. I also think he can pull this off but, unlike many here, I'm approaching this with an open mind and if he stinks, I'll no doubt say so once I've seen him in it!”

You know I respect your opinion and thoughts Stuart but I have to disagree with you on that point. Whilst there has been a knee jerk reaction to the news of his casting, some even being rather hostile, the majority of posters on here do put forward their feelings in an articulate and thought provoking manner. Heaven forbid this became anything like OG!

I agree with Black Guardian and compared to an OG thread, this one is positively friendly. I replied to an article regarding RTD on OG where my point was that I didn't like the direction RTD was taking, and the abuse I received was immense. Views are totally polarised on that forum and the middle ground is usually shouted down

Besides the arguments I've been giving here is not that Peter Kay is a bad actor, but that I don't think his casting was done because he was right for the role. It's always for headlines and that devalues the show.

Fair enough - maybe mine was the knee-jerk reaction! Yes, most people have expressed their points reasonably enough - it's the odd one or two who annoy me!

We all might not see eye to eye at times but from the many debates we have all engaged in most of them have been conducted fairly and people haven't been screamed or shouted down for having opposing opinions. In fact I like hearing them as you might see or hear something which you may have not picked up yourself!

We are all united in our love for the series but we all recognize that no programme is beyond constructive criticism and it doesn't make any of us less of a fan if we do. There are those out there who think it is disloyal to say anything that could be interpreted as negative....

I for one can't wait for the new series to kickoff so we can get down to the real business of discussing the episodes every Saturday night.

Listen, the series has a history of casting comedic actors in serious roles. Not just this series but the original too. Jon Pertwee? He was better known for The Navy Lark and quickly became the most dour Doctor and one of the best.

Let's not be too hasty in attacking Peter Kay quite yet.

While I agree that a lot of the reaction in this thread has been knee-jerk-negative, I do think it has been rather more intelligently put than most of the drivel on OG.

How do you know? What is your knowledge of the role in question?

He could give us one of the best Who villains in years..I just don't want to see him not utilised to the fullest as Simon Pegg was in The Long Game which was a wasted opportunity IMO.

My view on this is pretty much the same as the BG's, i.e. Peter Kay isn't one of my favourite comedians - and I haven't seen him act in any of his serious roles, so I'll just wait and see how he does in the episode.

My main concern is that I keep hearing about new castings and about episodes that haven't even been filmed yet. Surely this is going to push back the start date even further?

Well they did choose to film the beginning, the end and the middle in that order so perhaps that could explain a lot.

So are you suggesting he went to an audition and got the part on merit? I find that really difficult to believe.

I think I read on OG that they were filming scenes from Boom Town not long before the series started airing, so I guess they do the last bit of filming and SFX as the series starts.

If this was Peter Kay from three years ago, I would say great bring it on. Peter Kay now is a atention seeking, overated sleb who hasn't done anything decent in three years. All he does now is guest star on crappy chat shows and spoil things like Wallace & Gromit. I certainly think this series will be a joke with all these slebs and gimmicks.

I don't envy the poor fx folk who must have to work flat out and under a lot of pressure to get the job done in time.

After seeing Simon Pegg in Doctor Who and Shaun of the Dead, I have second thoughts on Peter Kay's casting. Maybe it isn't all that bad. Lets just hope he'll take the role as serious as its meant to be - hope he'll squeeze all the acting ability that he has out of him.

Anyway, I dont wanna feel glum about the new series. Lets just let it run and enjoy it!
