Isnt it about time all these shows were axed PERMANENTLY???? You know, shows like Are You Being Served, Hi De Hi, Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Keeping Up Appearences, Waiting For God, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, Only Fools And Horses, etc.!!!

I really cant imagine anyone now watching them, except those that live in the past and havent come out of their comfort zone boxes yet and realized that it is now the 21st Century and we are in the year 2006!!!!

The thing is all these shows are out on DVD sets now anyway, with all the complete series', plus bonus features and extra unscreened episodes and interviews and outtakes, etc.!!! So, if all these out of date Brits still want to watch them, why dont they buy the DVD sets so that they can sit at home with their tea and crumpets and watch them over and over and over again to their hearts content!!!!!!

Then perhaps our cable/satelite packages would be freed up so that other better programmes could be shown, like more LIVE satelite transmissions from the USA or something!!

No, tell us how you really feel instead of sitting on the fence

If there wasn't a certain amount of demand for it then they wouldn't show it. I have plenty of those mentioned on DVD but will still watch them on the TV as well.

I also get to see quite alot of American broadcasting, and I tell no lie when I say we definitely get the best of what they have to offer, most of the rest of it is dross.

I'm sure we wouldn't see so many repeats if the modern stuff was any good. How can modern day stuff compare to the old episodes of Fawlty Towers, Porridge etc etc - they were classics and even though I've seen them all countless times, I still find them more amusing that the new stuff.

Clearly I am one of these people who are living in the past!

US transmissions? Like non-stop OC and One Tree Hill? Sounds like a nightmare to me. We already see the few good and endless steam of crap shows the US has to offer over the infinite cable channels we have. Most of which are over-rated formulaic tripe. If you want to watch more of this nonsense buy a multi-region DVD player and order DVD's off the net

Are You Being Served, Hi De Hi, Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Keeping Up Appearences, Waiting For God, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, Only Fools And Horses,
I'm 30 and remember watching a lot of these as a kid and I agree they are totally crap now.
How can anyone find Hi De Hi, Some Mothers.... and Fawlty Towers funny in this day & age.
My taste in comedy grew up after puberty.

I agree with you over some of the shows you mention, particularly Keeping Up Appearances and Only Fools and Horses which have just been repeated to death now.

If TV companies do need to fill in between the newer programmes with 'classic comedies' from the 70s, 80s and 90s, I'm sure there are loads of really good comedies from that era that haven't been repeated to the point of irritation and still have some life left in them.

For example - Joking Apart. Great show, rarely repeated.

Fawlty Towers will never lose it's appeal.
It remains one of the finest comedy shows of all time and I never fail to laugh at every episode I watch, even if I have watched it a zillion times before.
As long as a comedy show makes you laugh it will never 'age'

It's good to see these old comedies still on the telly, if nothing else to remind us how good old comedy was! Apart from Peter Kay's stuff modern comedy has become incredibly unfunny. (I apologise if i've left any other good modern comedy shows out).

I think there are some comedy shows that we remember cos they were part of our growing up so the appeal doesnt go away. I loved Hi de Hi and will watch repeats if I'm not doing anything else. I will also watch repeats of Goodnight Sweetheart cos it makes me laugh and also Dinnerladies.

I watch Fawlty Towers on dvd a lot and still find it funny
Things like Dad's Army, Only Fools and Are You Being Served will never lose there appeal to most

I love them and I am only 19, they are much better than the crap on nowadays with some exceptions like 8 Simple Rules, My Hero/Family erm Little Britain was funny but became slight tedious

They dont do comedy like they used to

I think you are right there Murk. Having said that though I used to love Citizen Smith when it was first on TV and I was a teenager. I saw it recently and thought it was really daft and had to wonder why I thought it was so great. Thats not typical though, I do still like most of the "old" stuff.

Why on earth would these channels want to take off classic comedies and show Live satellite broadcasts from the USA?? We get enough US imports on our channels as it is, we don't need to see them live. It would be far too expesnive. I can't see why exactly you think anyone would want to watch live broadcasts from the USA anyway??

Im 23 and love watching the old comedies. Modern rubbish such as The Office, My Hero and that Two Pints of Larger crap can't compete.

TVGirl- what a great post, I enjoyed reading that (made me laugh too ) and to the most part I must agree. The way TV is structured in this country is an embarrassment and yet we apparently at one time were the best in the world. If thats really true, well then it certainly isn't now.

Okay I appreciate the fact that UK Gold (now UKTV Gold) used to be a good channel for classics, now it is nothing more than a generic channel showing day after day showing the same old so-called classics.

Most of these sitcoms are now lame. Only Only Fools & Horses (my fave sitcom) and Fawlty Towers really hold up well today...But I never watch them on UKTV Gold, I watch them on DVD...much better- no ads and better picture quality. UKTV Gold should be axed in favour of a channel (name it just UKTV) showing newly commissioned stuff and channels like TV Land in America should show them much further down the EPG list. This also applies to Paramount Comedy 2 which now shows old 70s sitcom on constant repeat.

I HATE UKTV GOLD AND THE WHOLE WAY THEY SHOVE THESE SHOWS CONSTANTLY IN YOUR FACE ON A HIGH CHANNEL NUMBER.

TV in this country is a joke...ITV - the UK's biggest and oldest commercial station is now so pathetic there's nothing on it worth watching, plus we have timeshifts, spin-offs, quizzes, teleshopping, texting on screen, text games and babestation type shows wasting bandwidth on Sky, cable and freeview.

Quantity over quality was never a good thing you know.

Incidentally, when I was in America last year I noticed a huge difference in television over there compared to ours, sure there's a lot of repeats but there ain't none the above crap there that we have.

What would the channels show in their place. They can't fill their schedules as it is without repeats and removing shows like the above leaves an even bigger gaping hole in the schedules.

Other people love the old sitcoms of the past while others like you hate them. You can't please everyone all the time. With too few programmes for too many channels this is what happens - repeats and lots of them.

And another point is that not everyone has sky or ntl or homechoice so we can get UKTV Gold or I cant anyways, so we get like 3 or 4 showings of classic comedy a week, which I think is enough really because I wouldnt want to watch it every single day (even though I love classic comedy --see above post)

If they axed it what will they put in its place, some american crap, maybe reality tv oh what a joy that would be to watch

The only way kids of today are gonna realise real comedy is if they keep showing the classic programs as mentioned on this thread

Comedy has gone downhill with shows like that Tate women with that stupid catchphrase "Am I Bovvered" (sp)

Now will someone please explain to me how that is funny because all I can see is a bad spelling of the word "Bothered"

Sorry but I think they are great classics and should be repeated. Fair enough, some are repeated too often on uktv etc and it seems like the same episode is on every week, but to get rid of them for good is a stupid idea imo
