Have they ever claimed to be actually in Oz? On the first program last night, when they were doing their live presenting bit and talking to the celebs, there seemed to be an awful lot of lag between them and the celebs. The cynic in me says this is because Ant and Dec are really in a studio somewhere in London.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Yes i did notice this. But i thought that about 5 seconds was the usual gap between UK and US - surely UK and Oz would be much much more. Oz is a big place - perhaps the distance from the hotel and the studio was quite large. Or perhaps the studio is on the edge of the jungle/bush and the hotel is miles away from them.

Well because of the lighting and the way it looked, when it first started I assumed they were in a studio in London. But they seemed to intimate they were indeed in Australia and it would seem oddd ofr them to do film pieces about the place and then return to the UK - but who knows. Maybe a studio in Oz???

Oh yes they couldnt have been in london as they were doing location filming aswell. Im sure that Ant+Dec said that those green things were beds - maybe beds for the 7 (or 8 in this case) drarfs

No. But I've had another thought

It occured to me that if they are in a studio in Oz, they it may be easier to use a satelite to bounce a signal to the celebs. The Jungle is likely to be a bit short on the communications infrastructure side of things & satelite may be the only option.

the lapse to the moon is a matter of eight seconds or so, air, so I really can't believe that the lapse to the us is 5 seconds.

The electromagnetic waves that carry the signal travel at 300 000 km per second. This distance to Oz from the uk is one order of magnitude less than that, so at the most, the lapse due to signal would be about .2 of a second (there and back). There may be some additional delay to the transmission of the signal through the amplifying and transmission equipment, but not enough to make a significant difference - at a guess that additional delay would be hundredths or thousandths of a second.

That's only for sound ( radio waves travel at the speed of light )
For TV pictures, there is of course a longer delay.

The delay on a single satellite hop is typically 0.5 second

And don't forget the gap for sound cuts [swearing etc] like when eventually NB tells UG and TB to f**k off

On the faint offchance that you are not being ironic, and for the benefit of those who can't detect irony, I'd like to point out that all radio and television information is transmitted via the electromagnetic spectrum, television usually at slightly shorter wavelengths and higher frequences than radio information (more information being transmitted so higher frequency needed). All waves in the em spectrum travel at the speed of light in a vacuum, and very slightly slower in air.

If ant and dec were in oz, and so were the celebs, it would still all be controlled from London. So there would be 2 hops happening.

If it was being controlled in Oz, there would still be atleast 1 hop between A+D and the celebs.

That's where the delay comes in.

Clean feed and all that.

Well we all know now that Ant+Dec and the others must be about 10mins away from each other if they can get from the studio to the "jungle" between links !

i didnt watch it tonight (was watching BBC2) but when i watched it last night when it started it did seem VERY set up and didnt loook like a proper jungle at all, maybe it was the bright lights they used or something but the way everything was so crystal clear and perfect seemed to me like they were in a big movie studio or something.

Considering that Ant & Dec turned up in the camp to issue the first Bushtucker challenge on Sunday means that they have to been in the Jungle too. Prehaps they are in a temporary studio which has been decorated to look like the jungle - after all they can't be outside if it rains all the equipment will get wet!

Have they ever claimed to be actually in Oz?
Yes, on Sunday

Don't forget that the link is likely to be digital. Hence there will be encoding and decoding delays as well as the actual transmission delay in the link.

This would be totally consistent with the delay seen and heard in the show.

Ant and Dec are really out there.

The signal comes into the UK by a couple of satellite hops , the long way round. That is via a satellite over the US.
The delay between transmission and broadcast is about 2 seconds.

All editing is done out there....
As with other programmes of this type , there will no doubt be a massive edit suite/control room , on site.....and a comfortable hotel very near by for the crew to retire to.

I'm not sure which Oz theme park they are using for the programme , perhaps someone can enlighten us.

Regards,

John.
