You can hack your dvd recorder by this follow:

Switch on DVD recorder and make sure no disc is in the tray
Press the "SYSTEM" button on the remote control
Change the "REMOTE CONTROL USED" from "DVD RECORDER" to "DVD PLAYER"
Store this change (important)
On the remote control press "PLAY,1,5,9" (the display on the recorder will now display 11 dashes)
Now, using the remote enter the following 121 212 005 255 (last few digits won't appear on the screen - but don't worry)
Press "PLAY" on the remote
Switch off the recorder and wait for a few seconds
Switch recorder back on and using the remote control press the "SYSTEM" button. Change "REMOTE CONTROL USED" back to "DVD Recorder". Remember to store this change

So that your dvd will turn into multi-region as you can use any disc from anywhere else...

I have just tried that on mine, and it didnt work. Not to worry though; my other DVDRecorder is multi-region anyway, and that wasnt even advertised as multi-region!!

Note that the remote hacks for Philips gear won't enable playback of RCE discs, although non RCE Region 1 should play fine.
You may find you have to try the hack more than once to get it to work

Dont use the RCE (Region 0) disc as it dont work when you hack the dvd recorder - use the Region from 1 to 6 that usual work fine all way - Ive hacked the HRW720 hard drive for my dad and it worked fine also last time when I used DVD-958 -- also worked fine all way but remember dont buy any disc contained RCE cos it dont work - just buy Region 1 disc that you can find on www.playusa.com that it has lots of films that usual work on your dvd recorder - when you hack your DVD-70 then it changed to auto change inside the unit when you put any disc from R1 to 6 itself.

Beware the 'PLAY 1 5 9' remote hack method for Philips: it only allows 25 changes then locks the recorder to the final setting.

There's a different way with permanent effect, using the RC6 code to prime the recorder:

http://www.home.zonnet.nl/jeroenverh...giovrijall.htm

Though this site talks about Philips DVD players, the hacks described work on their recorders.

Note: Using this RC6 method, you can change the region setting as many times as you like, and which will enable the playback of problematic RCE discs.

This is not quite correct.
RCE is added only to some Region 1 discs.
Region 0 are uncoded and play on any region.
PLAYUSA will indicate RCE discs, however, they just automatically show RCE to all Columbia dvd's and some others, when RCE is normally only on vey recent new titles.
Many Columbia discs don't use RCE.
