For anyone wanting a very high quality IP phone, a Snom what you need! Linksys ATA's are rather good for residential use, and quite nicely priced. Skype is rather unprofessional, you heard all of the ridiculous sounds it makes?

Hello.
I have sipgate on my computer at the moment. Am on 2MB Ntl cable, computer chip Athlon xp 1.8. So my system is easy fast enough to take it. Had sipgate for about 6 months, but the sound does seem to break up quite often. Before that I had Skype, with no problems, and crystal clear sound. Anyone able to comment on what might be causing it? Also, I read some time ago in the forums that it was possible to use Skype and Sipgate on the same computer. But every time I try to use both it doesn't work. Have tried to use the search function to find the previous posts, but search is down. I think I need to change the port setting for the 2 systems, but am stuck as to how to do this. Anyone able to help me out please? The reason I don't want to take sipgate off the system (which would remove the problem) is that sipgate is cheaper than skype for some calls.

You change the port number in the phone rather than in sipgate or skype. I don't know if you can do it on a softphone. Are you using X-Lite? Try the network menu.

If you want cheap calls, try www.voipcheap.com but read the FAQ carefully first. You can use a softphone or IP phone of your own or their browser that looks a bit like Skype.

Yes, I have the x-lite software. After I had posted I realized I had not tried downloading the latest software from Sipgate and Skype. Then I tried unchecking start-up when windows starts, for both systems (in the new software). Pleased to say that it works now. I just have to click on whichever icon on the desktop I wish to use, then after that call exit, and then click on the other icon, and that works fine too. I clicked on the link you kindly provided, and as you say, I think doing it that way would also work. It's really handy being able to pick which system to use, as I can choose to use the best features from each, as needs dictate.

I agree, except that Skype cannot be used on my IP phone. They do not support SIP, the industry open standard that mostly everyone else uses.

I still recommend trying http://www.voipcheap.com/en/download.html as a Skype alternative if you make a lot of landline calls.

Say you make 5 hours of landline calls a week, I reckon voipcheap costs you about 0.19 p/minute (0.0019 £/min). It gets less the more calls you make or if you make some mobile calls.
At the other end of the scale, if you make about 1 call a year, it goes up to about 0.93 p/minute, so either way it's cheaper than Sipgate or Skype. That's assuming my calculations were correct!

that's nice, but I am calling uk landlines free for 6 months using skype. You just have to buy £10 worth of credit and... that's it.

Are VoIP home products still alive a kicking or has the hype worn off?

Skype is still mostly hype, but real VoIP is still going strong and more and more people are joining up.

http://www.voip.co.uk/res_products.html has a good plan, £1.99 per month or £20 for the year and evening and weekend calls are free (each call up tto 60 mins) and daytime calls are 2p for 60 mins.

http://www.voipbusterpro.com/en/ Worth looking at, just buy €10 (Ten Euro) of credit.

I work in the media and we use Skype from time to time to broadcast programmes. For some reason around 2 in the afternoon the link is always dodgy, although it is great beforehand and improves the longer we broadcast.
