And sadly by doing so, and by her actions to that point, she's done nothing but reinforce many peole's beliefs that gay activists and the like actually are like that stereotype - loudmouthed, overly confrontational, and irrational, calling "abuse, hatred, and prejudice" at the drop of a hat.

She didn't scream predudice at "the drop of a hat". I don't believe the word "homophobe" even came into use untill 5 days into the show. There had been many arguements before then and Rhona had never once tried to maintain that those arguements arose because of homopobia.
I agree that Nigel was trying to keep his veiw of homosexuality under wraps but he is clearly homophobic as shown by his comments to Darren. In a way I think that is even worse. If Rhona's sexuality is a problem for him then he should have the guts to tell her to her face instead of sniping about it behind her back.
I admit Rhona has complained a lot and she has been cruel at times but I think in most cases she was just giving as good as she got. She has been verbally aggressive but never seriously threatened phsyical violence (yeah, she said she could "take" Nigel but she started laughing straight after so I'm guessing she didn't actually mean it). If Nigel had said "if you were a bloke I'd knock you sparko!" to Tara or Nell there would have been a public outcry. Just cos Rhona has a bit of a mouth on her doesn't mean she is any less vulnerable or sensitive. I believe Nigel's comments genuinely scared her.
