Dr Who B&W/Colour question.

Getting slightly confused with UK Golds showing of pertwee episodes.

Can someone tell me why some episodes are in colour and others in b&w. Is this because UK Gold are not showing them in correct order?

Watching the episode "The Daemons" on Uk gold confused me. The episode started in colour and then myself disappearing for some coffee during ad break came back to see the episode continue in colour. Very odd I thought why not wait until a new story to start showing in colour?

does someone know any of these......rant over.

All stories from the beginning of Jon Pertwee's time were made in colour. Sadly, quite a few of them no longer exist in their original format. Some have been returned as American videotapes (with poor quality picture and colour) while others remain only as black and white film recordings.

Some stories existing in black and white have been recolourised using off-air Betamax tapes found in America. UKTV Gold have shown some of these recently (The Silurians, Terror of the Autons)

The same has happened to The Dæmons but for some reason, UKTV Gold only has access to the recolourised episode 5. Episode 4 has always existed in colour.

For the DVD releases, a new technique to convert back from NTSC (the American format) to PAL (the British format) has been used and stories like The Claws of Axos and Inferno look fantastic compared to the versions shown by UKTV Gold.

It's all very complicated and you would do well to visit The Doctor Who Restoration Team for a more technical explanation.

This is good advice, it never ceases to amaze me how much effort they put into the DVDs.

Another good visit is the OG Episode Guide, this will tell you what form the Pertwee episodes are in (and all the others if you care to look).

Please tell me that UK Gold won't show the whole of "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" in black and white simply because episode 1 no longer exists in colour.
I've asked this before:
If they can mix colour and B&W with The Daemons why could they not show the existing colour and colourised episodes of "Ambassadors of death"?

Probably because there were no colour versions available when they originally bought the episodes.

They have always shown Invasion of the Dinosaurs in b&w for episode one then in colour for 2 - 6.

How many of these stories exist, Stuart, where they comprise of a mixture of colour and b&w episodes?

Not many. The Ambassadors of Death has a mixture because there are some American Betamax tapes but unfortunately there's a nasty, strobing effect on some of the episodes so they haven't been able to recolour the whole story.

The Mind of Evil only exists in b&w apart from a short segment at the end of episode 6 (I think) which has been recoloured from American off-airs. Apparently the guy wo taped the story used the same tape to record a football match or something and that's all that remains.

The only other stories with odd episodes in b&w are Planet of the Daleks (episode 3) and Invasion of the Dinosaurs (episode 1).

(This is all from memory but I think it's right.)
