I'm all for chucking loads in and therefore not distancing the new from the old (why is the Ecclestone series classed as season 1? - I HATE that!).

Get the Brigadier back, the Master, the Timelords, the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Sontarans, Peri, Nyssa - the lot of them.

Can't wait for a 7 Doctors type thing one day!

Before the last season aired, i would have been in favour of bringing old characters back, but now i have a slightly uneasy feeling about it. I suppose its ok on a very infrequent basis, but it might be mistaken by some as a sign of weakness in terms of current character development. Stylisticly the "new" version of the show is as different as i could have imagined from the classic series, and whilst it was great seeing daleks on screen again, and much as i am looking forward to seeing the cybermen again, i believe there should be a greater emphasis on developing newer characters and storylines.

Regarding K9, I never liked him even when I was a youngster. As far as I'm concerned, his introduction marked the start of the progressive decline of the original Dr. Who.

And the Slitheen in the Ecclestone series of Who were those farting aliens, right? They were another big mistake and I hope we've seen the last of them.

Me too.

.... but for Gawd's sake not Bonnie Langford

I also agree about The Brigadier. But not the politically-correct black female brigadier that we saw in 1989's "Battlefield" story. To capture the true spirit of the original, it would need to be another crusty, upper-class tally-ho type as played so splendidly by Nicholas Courtney, though obviously the man himself would be too old to respise his miltary role now.

Nicholas Courtney doesn't look too old to be, say, UNIT's chief liason officer to the government or even head of "Torchwood"...

I think it is a sad reflection of the fact that the new series is basically a new series with an old name.

Me too! I always felt her departure, while fitting to the character, was rather clumsily done and rushed, so a reappearance, if the story was right, would be most welcome.

But Janet Fielding was pretty crap, really.

Nope! Her early appearances she was pretty annoying with all that shouting but thought she was feisty, challenged the Doctor, was eager to learn and understand and wasn't afraid of showing her emotions!

I would certainly - sometimes her character shone through but mostly the acting was awful. Especially one scene in Earthshock when a cyberman shoves her across a room - very funny!

Probably but she wasn't nearly as bad as some people would have you believe.

Why has this degenerated into a "worst companion" thread?

perhaps we're scared they'll bring Adric and Mel back?..
