Hmmm, for me they palyed exactly the same characters in their first seasons. Eccleston was hyperactive with his 'amazing' catchphrase/word every episode. And with Ecclestones ears he didn't have to gurn.

Tennant was as hyperactive as Ecclestones doctor with his 'Fantastic' catchphrase/word every episode. And he had to gurn abit due to his lack of ears.

£rd season and the gurning has gone. The total hyperactivity has gone as has the corny catchphrase word. But not the gay reference that appears in every episode thats still the main story arc over all seasons.

I couldn't stand Ecclestone, I wish it had been Tennant from the start, and that is saying something because I couldn't stand Tennant either before he became Dr Who.

After 2 & a bit series, it's getting difficult - LOVED Chris Eccleston (wish he stayed longer) - however I'm Loving David Tennant more & more....

Also like Martha a lot, but kinda missing Rose though

I'm confused...why do we need to choose between them?

I love them both - but on comparing them, David Tennant wins it for me.

I think David Tennant is the better doctor

Would a poll not make it easier to see who is in the lead??

David Tennant. Hard to imagine anyone else in the role now.

Since this thread was started OVER A YEAR AGO I have got used to DT in the role now, though I still look back to series one with fondness and wish that Chris hadn't decided to leave - I would love to see how things would have progressed if he hadn't.

Both - CE was better at doing serious stuff but no so good doing zany quirky stuff. DT is opposite.

One mans Bhuna is another mans Dupiaza. Me? I prefer Dupiaza.

Christopher Eccleston for me... gravitas coupled with geniune oddness. I think he could carry off the "quirkiness" with an intensity and underlying menace/edge. (Plus an extra point for being much sexier imo!)

David Tennant is good (liking him better without Rose) but reckon he's more your expected Doctor type, a bit too boyish and sometimes lots of random "shoutiness".

With CE series they where reinventing the format, I feel in a sense it's going backwards a bit.... and as much as i hate to say it I found the last few episodes (in terms of storylines) a bit well....dull.

Feels repetitive.....and I wish they hadn't gone down the road of making Martha soppy eyed over the Doctor. I'd have prefered a bit more of a sparky "meeting of minds" kinda of a thing....which could have developed.

(As someone suggested on another thread......a Dana Scully type characterisation/relationship)

I think they are both very watchable actors, but DT is more the Doctor than CE.

I'd say Tennent, but CE had some great moments as the doctor.

In "Dalek" he was immense the whole way through, right from first meeting the Dalek until the end. In "Father's Day" he played the emotional part better than DT could. Again he was good with the Daleks in the finale but his best moment was the "Everybody lives!" in "The Doctor Dances". That was just a perfect scene to wrap up a perfect story.

However Tennent has lots of good points going for him. He can play the eccentric side of the Doctor much better than CE could, and also has a real dark side that we've only just scratched the surface of, which I expect to see develop in "Evolution" on Saturday.

tennant
eccleston seems to have washed his hands of the whole experience

I think the 1st series was better quality, but Eccleston was uninspiring as the Doctor. He tried too hard, and never looked comfortable with the role.

David Tennant is fantastic - extraordinary actor, and totally believable as the doctor.

I was gutted when it was announced that Ecclestone was going to quit as I was one of those who had gone away from Dr Who but came back when he took over. Now however I am glad he went, I think David Tennant is far better and reckon mad1 might just have hit the nail on the head as to why

I am posting this for my four year old (lol)

When we watched the final series one episode he cried when the Dr changed. (But not as much as he had already done when all the Daleks died - issues there i think!!)

But now he loves DT almost as much as his mum does (lets face it DT is just soo much more attractive than CE).

I think DT plays the comedic aspects much better than CE and he does play the anger, tension and positive misery the Dr endures fantastically.

Admittedly CE was a much more feriocious Dr than DT and i would be one very scared Dalek/ cyberman etc etc if i had to face him in a dark alley. But the Dr is a quirky character and DT does this a far greater credit.

Notes on the Dr so far...
Worst episode has to have been the Peter Kay one - what was that about??

Best the Impossible Planet two parter - can not get the little one to even entertain watching that one again it scared him rigid!!

Peter Davidson was jus about the worst Dr Who ever too!!! Really can't stand to watch him, My personal faves have to be Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy.

Looking forward to a very long run with DT at the helm
D xx
