Anyone know is there a way of telling what the charge will be to ring an 0870 type number before actually making a call?

You could try contacting your telephone service provider or even looking on their website.

Code:
BT:

        Daytime Evening Weekend
0845 3.00 1.00 1.00
0870 7.51 3.75 1.50
0870 09 4.95 2.49 2.00
0870 185 4.95 2.49 2.00
0870 187 4.95 2.49 2.00
0870 188 4.95 2.49 2.00
Most other networks will charge more, a few the same.

18185 charge 4p/min to 0870, so if you can't find the real number from www.saynoto0870.com then 18185 is worth using for daytime calls to 1870.

Use 18185 to make your calls. It tells you at the beginning of each call that the call will cost Xp per minute. I've been using the company for months now and save a fortune over calls via BT.

I started to use 18866, 1899 and then later (occasionally)18185 over 2 years ago now, my friends and family use mainly 1899 (for the daytime 01 and 02 calls - 3p per call) they now use Primus 2 for the free evening and weekend calls. With the occasional use of 18185.

I've been using VoIP for around 11 months now (11 months of free calls all for €6), so in September last year I dropped my landline, and just use VoIP, so that 6 months saved of having to pay line rental, and I still get the free calls.

Useful chart. Thanks BexTech.
Yes, I do use 18185 but strangely it doesn't always give the price on 0870 which prompted my question.
Now I'll know

If you really want save money, have a look at the website:

http://www.saynoto0870.com/

This will give geographic numbers for many well known companies.

The announcement is made in place of the first few seconds of the ringing pattern, therefore if the call is answered immediately then there isn't a long enough ringing period to announce the price of the call.

How can you drop your landline yet still have access to Broadband internet? Just curious as I'd like to do the same but can't fathom out how to. Cheers.

Cable Broadband Internet does not require a telephone-line subscription.

Yes, I have broadband via cable (Telewest) this doesn't require a phone-line, the broadband comes through the same co-ax that you can (not compulsory) receive the TV service.

ADSL on the other-hand requires phone-line as the broadband is sent down the phone-line.

The only reason why I have TW TV at the moment is because I could have paid £25/month for broadband only, or £19.99/month for same broadband and free starter TV (for 12 months), once the 12 months is up I'll cancel the TV, as Sky Digital is the better TV service.

Unfortunately, living in the middle of nowhere, we can't get cable. (electricity here is still steam operated)!!!
