Best Taps
thebuns
28-03-2006
Just got a Toppy for my 75 year old mum.
What would you recommend as the best taps to download to make it as easy as possible for her to use?
Thanks Alan.

First thing; is she already using it? If not I would do any alterations you are going to do before she uses it. Some TAPs (EPGs) make the Toppy look completely different and use commands differently. So if possible might be wise not to show her something she will have to unlearn.
Some suggestions ASAP

I would look at
EPGnavigator.
I do not use it myself but it has a very clear guide and most importantly collects its own information without regular user intervention (I believe).

mcgCYRResume (1.0)
Automates resume playback when it is rudely interupted by the start of a timer recording.

One of the Quick Jump TAPs to easily skip ads; FF is slow on the Toppy and these are a far superior way of doing it.

I use the Quick Jump that comes with MyStuff EPG. This is another good EPG. It can for instance record any thing called Coronation Street either on one channel or on all of them with just one timer set up. brilliant.
However it does need another TAP such as eit2mei to collect its information. Your mother would not beed to know this however; works automatically once set up properly.

Others will have other suggestions.

NB Re my first post; The standard advice is to use a TAPless Toppy to start so you can understand how it works; avoids confusion later when you cannot work out if something is being done by the Toppy or a TAP. However in this case I favour avoiding your mum.

Probably consdier a TAP to make subtitles a single key press - my brother in laws deaf as a post and whinged about the couple of presses it takes as standard.

I think the UK Oz Surfer is a great one for all levels of users too.

Thanks.
She knows she got it but not seen it yet, so I will take your advice, Richard. She likes gadgets but she likes them easy to use. My mum loved the TIVO, but not the Panasonic (TIVO died and I've got the Panasonic, oh well!)

PS she asked me to say she not 75 for 2 weeks yet.

A lady of taste. . if she is used to a Tivo then I would strengthen my recomendation of MyStuff; it gives the nearest equivalent of TIVO season passes, with its word search timer features.

Sounds like my Mum; she will not let people know I am 60 because it gives her age away. Actually she is 82 and has a PVR (Pace Twin) and a PC. The tech support is a bit trying.

Send my Happy Birthday wishes to your Mum.

My poor old mum's got me dad to contend with. "What happens if I press this, son?"
