I have a white 4GB Ipod Nano which I bought about a month after it first came out. I love it to bits, but my friend has a black 30GB Ipod Video, and I love it. I paid £179 for my Nano, and now the video is only £189 from Amazon.

I'm going to New York in June, and I'm considering buying an Ipod Video when I go there, and giving my Nano to my sister. However, do you think there may be a new Ipod coming out soon? How soon after the release of previous Ipods, has a new one been released?

Nothing announced at the Apple Convention, so I don't see it happening until late fall - in time for Christmas, if there is indeed one to be made - maybe a widescreen fully video adept iPod? I dunno. Right now, its not on the cards.

there are rumors, that they are going to release a new ipod this year, check out sites like engadget as they give you some good idea of what's to come

If you're buying an iPod in NY, check out B&H Photo and Video on 34th & 5th - they have some fantastic deals there.

I've never understood the appeal of the Nano, or any flash-based players, unless you do actually need to jog with them. Sure, the Nano looks great, but hard drive based players offer so much value for money, whatever make you get. Some people say they just don't need the extra space, but you never know and for the sake of an extra £20/30 its surely worth getting the HD-based player? Especially with the iPods, its not like the normal ones are much bigger than the Nanos.

I've had bad experiences with hard drives that have lead cushy lives inside a desktop PC. No way would I trust one on the road as a music player. Flash memory all the way for me.

I think I've given up on Flash Memory MP3 players, I bought a 128mb last year and it plays for a few secs then cuts out. I've done everything to try and get it to work from replacing the battery about 10 times reformatting it but it just shorts out for some reason.

Is there not an apple meeting today, their 30th anniversary, something big is going to be launched.

I bet hundreds will turn up at this apple expo, steve jobs will announce this fabulous widescreen touchsreen, bluetooth, wifi, £100, 400gb. And at 11:59 steve will shout APRIL FOOLS.

I'm off to New York in four weeks. I still haven't decided what to do. I desperately want an Ipod Video, but if a new Ipod is going to be released in a few months then I might as well stick with my Nano for now. I would have thought they wouldn't release a new Ipod until early/middle of 2007. I just don't know though. Hmmm...

My friend was telling me the new iPod is basically the same as iPod video but will be touch screen so you dont have to use the scroll thingy but im not sure if its confirmed or not will have to ask him. Im sticking with my iPod Video though

i think the next step for Ipods has to be with DAB built in surely?

And doesn't the fact that it's basically a disposable unit (i.e you can't replace the batteries) annoy anyone else as well as me??!

i'm still in the dark ages i'm afraid. i've got a mini discman which i still use and i'm more than happy with. And although i can't exactly get my entire record collection on it (four lp's at a push on one disc!) i think it'll outlive most ipods.

There's no denying the beautiful design, but at that price, i'd want something to last a lifetime godamnit!!!

When a new ipod comes out...there will always be a newer one a couple of months later. Technology advances and moves on, so get it now!

It won't get any smaller or slimmer, so you might aswell.

The touchscreen ipod is reportedly mainly a P.D.A and henceforth waaaay to expensive for a casual music fan. (and would you want finger prints all over your screen?)

There may be a red iPod introduced tomorrow though. (Bono's charity - as opposed to a U2 iPod)

as you said there will always be new models always coming out. there was a big thing about the mini ipod when it came out, now its about the nano, and next it will be about the newest generation of the family.

I bought a used 8 month old 6GB mini Ipod with warranty last week. I was waiting to see what Apple would release but i got fed up waiting.

I didn't really like the colour scheme of the Nano's so i decided to go for a Mini in the colour of my choice.

Now i am just thinking about getting some accessories for it.

Just wait til the end of May if you can - there's reports of it being launched this week. Even if you might not buy the new one, you might aswell wait, and you could get a better deal on the older model.

I can still get around 15 hours battery life on my 14 month old iPod photo, btw.

DAB is doing terribly in the UK and is barely used in the USA. Apple is very unlikely to add it to a product.

You can replace the battery of the iPod yourself if you open it up and have the relevant battery (available online).

Apple rumours are the worst things to live by. The new iPod was supposed to come out in February, then March, then April and now May. There will always be something to wait for and nobody really knows what is happening.

The best advice I can give is to buy Apple products as soon as you can, that way you get as much enjoyment out of it before they change something.

Yup.

Touchscreen and portable video player = pointless. You'll spend half your time wiping mucky pawprints off the screen.

Yup again.

Replaces the battery in the wifes iPod mini with ahigher capacity one ... wasn't hard. Cost £8 odd on ebay and the battery life is now infinitely better. Well, it was a 1st gen mini so original battery life was pants.

But .... if you want portable video .... skip the iPod. I just invested in a Cowon A2 . Bit bigger than an iPod (but not too big to carry about) but in terms of what it can do it wee's on the iPod video from a great height ... no fannying around convering video to some stupid proprietary format for me . Not cheap but better value in the US than over here. I got mine shipped from the US and even with shipping it was still a better deal than buying in the UK.

you could always look here.

not sure how soon it's going to be - the next big thing is going to be the new iBook, macbook laptop which could be as soon as this week.

the other thing worth considering is what doesn't the current iPod do, that you think the new one might?#

i recently replaced my 3g one with video one having dropped and killed my old one) - and it has plenty of advantages - colour screen, longer battery life, ability to store and view photos and even video, bigger hard disk.

but assuming you primarily want it as a music player, i think it's virually as evolved as it's ever going to need to be.

(i say that now, but of course reserve the right to change my mind )

other than that - have a great time in NY!

Since when have mpeg4 and h.264 been proprietary?

Since 99% of the sources I download don't support/offer that format. Since my DVD player doesn't support it. Since DivX/Xvid is by far and away the most popular source available on the internet.

h264 is gaining more support and will doubtless be added to the A2 firmware in good time (the other advantage of the A2 is the almost continuous development of the firmware).

The video on the iPod is OK but doesn't come anywhere close to the A2 and other dedicated PMP's.
