Hi, I'm trying to find a cheap way of calling abroad that'll work from my landline and my PAYG mobile. I've found a website called Mootalk that claims to offer calls to all sorts of countries, e.g. Greece, Pakistan, India (which are the countries I want to phone) for 3p a minute or thereabouts, and you just dial the number to access the service so you don't have to give any credit card details or anything. I'm a bit surprised at this though - how are they able to bill me if I don't give them any of my details? It's a pay as you go phone, so they can't work out who I am from that.

There are several ways to make low cost international telephonecalls from the uk. A good way to find out the options is to look at http://niftylist.co.uk/

If you use the type of call divert service you mentioned you are billed by your normal landline provider in that the 0844 or 0871 type number will cost you a few pennies per minute, part of which is paid to the low cost call provider. The wholesale cost of most international calls is very small - normal BT/cable international prices are based on historical costs before satellites existed.

What payg network are you on calls to ngn numbers can be very expensive from PAYG phones.

The site you mention does not offer calls to India/Pakistan for 3p a minute.

This is the trouble with Orange, they were once a pretty good mobile phone company, a couple of years ago the started to offer poor tariffs, and within the last few months have become very poor indeed.

Their CS has never been top-notch, but now it's dreadful, their PAYG tariff poor value, and their new tariffs poor value. How the mighty have fallen.

Just-Dial on the access number above is quite good! The sound quality is good and I am always able to get through. I use it to call Austrailia.

At the time of the London bombings, I was unable to use Just-Dial as it kept saying 'All circuits a busy' So I had to use Telewest direct dial, I spent about half an hour and it came to about £2. This isn't what Telewest advertises as they say they charge about 40p per minute to direct dial to Austrailia, so I wonder what went wrong there???

Why is that that companies like Just-Dial and Clever Rates are able to offer calls to these destinations so cheaply wilst BT charges more than Telewest and Cable and Wireless.

Just to let anyone know, who is too lazy to use the instant dial services or call abroad indirectly, never to call abroad on a T-Mobile phone directly. I thought they were cheap until I found that they'd taken £10 out my phone for 10 minute call to Switzerland! If I used orange at the time, that call would of cost only £2.50. This is back in 2001, and from the T-Mobile site now it looks as though they haven't made it any cheaper!

I think T-Mobile must route their international calls via the Cable and Wireless network, Cable and Wireless must charge about 40p per minute for this call whilst T-Mobile adds on an extra 60p per minute including VAT. What a bloody liberty!

How much on a monthly basis do you earn through this, if you don't mind me asking?

Last month I earned about £9.60 last month. I have been advertising the number by using the Just-Dial advertisement cards which you can print off, I then stick loads of them up in phone boxes and if I have the time, I put them through peoples letter boxes.

Only problem is, if you stick them in BT phoneboxes, they are likely to be torn down with 12 hours as there is team of cleaners who go round ripping out any cards and advertisements that shouldn't be there. So, the best would be to put them up in Spectrum interactive phone box as they seem to take longer than BT to rip them down.

I earn about the same now, I used to be a Telco agent since 1996 and managed to earn quite a sum from that, but that disappeared, and now the revenue isn't as good with this Just Dial as it was at the beginning.

I deliver leaflets for the local political party, so the adverts are posted with them.

Just-Dial is owned by Telco of which has been aquired by One Tel of which has been aquired by Carphone warehouse and now trades as TalkTalk.

A lot of changes! Since One Tel have taken over, the revenue seems to be more reasonable than it was say 2 years ago.

Yes, a lot of changes, however I find now you don't get the revenue you did.

It was good in the Telco Global days, but then before the instant dials I was able to offer the indirect carrier service, when British gas took over the revenue dropped, now CPW own it, who knows what will happen.

Telco used to be the main indirect carrier for people with Orange and the then One2One mobiles, how things have changed.

Shame that Just Tel have recently been slapped on the wrist by OFCOM isnt it then?

Just-Dial is not a company and is nothing to do with Just-Telecom you moron!

Just-Dial is just a part of Telco Global which is now owned by One Tel, and one tel is now part of Carphone warehouse.

Just-Dial has only had one run in with Oftel which was years ago!

Centrica only owned the Telco global company for a short while (Since last June) or so.

Actually, reading the small print, it looks like the company I was looking at in my original post is a Just Dial reseller too. Although it does look like quite a slick operation so I dunno, they must run it as a proper business.
