Becoming disenchanted with the 5800.
Terry M
03-04-2006
Yesterday,I programmed two unattended recordings to commence,from standby,at 21.00 on ITV1,and Channel 5.
Having checked this morning,I found the unit displaying P001,but no display showing on the TV.
On pressing the power button on the 5800,the TV displayed the message "No signal on Tuner 1",and the 5800 was locked up.
Having switched the 5800 off at the mains, and switched it back on both the ITV1,and Channel 5 recordings showed 0mb lengths.Additonally,BBC 1,and 2,pictures were broken up neccessitating a factory reset, and a manual retune(being in an area receiving two transmitters).
Given the ongoing problem with the handling of subtitles, viz slow response leading to on screen scrambling, and slow clearance,I am beginning to think that this is not the wonder machine I was lead to believe.

Well, most people don't have those problems; if you're having reception problems, the first thing you really need to do is to check the signal strength of all your multiplexes; do remember that as the weather changes, you may find problems appearing that weren't apparent at other times of the year - my old OnDigital box never used to work properly in the summer.

If you have poor signal quality or other aerial problems, then you will get break up and bad recordings, whatever box you use.

I had to have a new aerial to resolve issues with freeview reception, toppy reception was about middle of the range compared to a couple of set tops I have. Issue you will probably see is with second tuner, it gets a slightly weaker signal.

So in BIL's house he can watch five ok, but if second tuner tries to record it then its patchy.

Aerial amp helped him a little, but most households will need a new aerial to get the best out of freeview.

I don't see any visible glitches on recordings.

Aerial was upgraded at time of issue, and purchase,of the Pace Twin.
Have experienced no signal problems with the Twin, and the Humax 8000,9200(returned because of other issues),and the Sony 920.
Why should the Topfield not only default a recording because of a signal glitch, but leave BBC 1 and 2 reception so broken up that it requires a retune?

have you checked the loop through cable? Tried connecting to tuner 2 first, then looping through to tuner 1?

What are your signal strengths on all the muxes? There's a guide on the Toppy web site that explains how you can check these. If you don't have sufficient signal quality, you will get problem; sometimes those problems may only manifest themselves due to certain other factors, like the weather, or the bloke next door playing with a moped. But they're still signal problems, and that seems to be what you're describing.

Nigel.
