OK so now I'm convinced the Topfield 5800 is the way to go PVR wise.

Thing is I've been stalling on getting a decent TV for ages and have been 'making do' with an old 14" portable while I've waited for the quality of LCDs to improve.

LCDs look good in the stores connected to DVDs, but generally leave a lot to be desired when displaying an analogue broadcast. As I want a LCD to 'watch TV' this was putting me off getting one.

However- now I'm sold on the idea of a Toppy - how have other people experienced the suitability of LCD panels for connecting to the Toppy?

and do people recomend anything in particular available at the moment? I was looking at the 28" region

IMHO the current crop of named brand LCD TVs cope with Freeview reasonably well. I have a Toshiba 32WLT58 and it's a fine picture.

I did not opt for a big screen as I have a small room. In the end went for a Panasonic TX23LXD50 now at Richer Sounds at £500.

I know I will not pay Sky for HD ( and extra £300 for ANOTHER box + an extra £120 pa on top of your Sky sub)

Very preased with the subtle colours and definition of the Pannys but beware the LCD black problem. All brands seem suffer from ambiant bleed from the backlight which affects them rendering good blacks in a dark room, Though is is mitigated by the non reflective surface which helps a lot. Look at www.avforums.com there is a lot of discussion re LCD.

The Toppy renders everything perfectly.....enjoy....

Oh yes, and if you get a 32WLT58 DON'T TUNE IT. NOT TO ANYTHING. Not the digital tuner or the analogue, especially not the analogue. Otherwise the crackle from the right speaker will drive you crazy. Or if not that crackle, the crackle of your wife complaing about it.

OTOH, mine complains so loudly I can't hear the crackle.

I can't hear the TV either.
