Mew

Does anyone here like Mew?

For those who don't know, Mew are a Danish band who recently won critical acclaim with their 2005 album ...And the Glass Handed Kites. In my opinion, they are probably the best thing ever to happen to music, and '...Kites' is easily the greatest album of this millennium. The band have been known to jokingly describe their music as "pretentious art rock", but I think I'd call them "progressive indie space pop". It's as ambitious and theatrical as it gets, but most importantly it's achingly beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable.

Anyway, I thought I'd post this now because their new single, The Zookeeper's Boy, is being released on Monday and I thought this would be a good chance for people to check them out. The single is delicious, and I'd advise anyone who likes music to go check it out. It would be really nice if this one gets in the charts.

The Zookeeper's Boy, out Monday and available from all good record stores.

And for the album:

Edit: Just realised I'm not the only one gushing over Mew. The average customer rating for the album on Amazon is a full 5 stars, and all of the reviews are glowing.

Love a lot of their songs, "Special", "Snow Brigade" and "Apocalypso", being some obvious examples.. But for some reason, "And the Glass Handed Kites" wasn't what I expected. I think it'll take me a few more listens to get into, maybe.. :-/

Only heard "She Spider" from the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack which I love. Dunno why I never listened to any of their other stuff, may do actually.

I know what you mean. '...Kites' definitely isn't an album that reveals everything on a first listen. It's so intricate and colossal that it can sometimes feel a little unwieldy.

I'd definitely recommend a few more listens though. For me at least, it gets better and better every time.

It's a stunning album and The Zookeeper's Boy is a very special song indeed. Absolutely gorgeous.
In a fair world it would be Number 1 for a month, but of course Big Fat Moyles won't be playing it so it won't be

I think The Zookeeper's Boy is what dying and going to Heaven sounds like. It would be a massive shame if it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Just thought I'd bump this up to remind everyone that The Zookeeper's Boy is released today! If you buy it, you won't regret it.

8/10 on Channel4 singles reviews Teletext P355 which is a little mean, but it does say ' an impressively towering song with fantastic vocals that recalls Prefab Sprout'

Bonkers... but I can't wait.

What are people's thoughts on the latest single?

It took me a while to get into it, but now I absolutely love it. Very upbeat and dancey, with an interesting rhythm section and fantastic vocals (as always).

Frengers (which was released in 2003) is one of my favourite albums of the last 10 years, much preferred it to ...And the Glass Handed Kites - although that's by no means a bad album either.

Mew are playing at Latitude this year so I'll get the chance to see them live, something I've not had the chance to do before - am really looking forward to it.

Not heard the latest single yet though, will have to give it a listen.
